Small Loss In Fire at Fair Barn

Attendance at the All Iowa fair remained high with 20 801 admissions and a near record 7 day gate forecast. A Friday morning fire burned a stock barn injuring three 4 H calves slightly while other damage was limited to exhibitor trunks.

Linn County Fair Schedule Highlights

Saturday events include Aberdeen Angus and 4-H dairy judging at 9 am with junior Angus Hereford and Shorthorn steer judging at 9 30. A 10 am 4-H demonstration and clothing judging follows, then 11 am junior market hog judging and clothing revue. Afternoon shows feature Hollywood Western Thrill Show with Chuck Connors at 2 pm and 8 pm The Rifleman. A 3 pm Linn 4-H Baby Beef Auction and 7 pm Open and Junior Beef Cattle Parade conclude the day.

Calves Rescue After Fire Hits Barn At 4-H Show

In a metal swine barn at a county show 15 calves were housed when an electric fan overheated and ignited straw bedding. Dick Brunsmann and Earl ham helped free animals as flames reached the roof before bystander buckets doused the blaze. Witnesses noted a calf tail snagged in the fan causing the fire.

Rifleman's Real Sons Having Big Time Here

ABC TV star Chuck Connors and four of his sons plus Randy Benson enjoyed a Cedar Rapids visit as The Rifleman toured the area. The Connors children signed autographs for fans, while Chuck said the road shows excite them more than home life. Connors was set for a busy day with personal appearances promoting the series.

Newburgh Welfare Plan Blocked by Court Injunction

State Supreme Court Justice John Donohoe granted a temporary injunction against Newburgh's welfare-tightening program. City Manager Joseph Mitchell said the city would appeal, arguing the legislature created the laws and only they can change them. Mitchell warned that the state board and attorney general could halt reforms only by taking over the welfare department or removing officials.

Eleven Cubans describe mutiny on Cuban freighter Bahia de Nipe

Eleven Cuban defectors tell how they seized the freighter Bahia de Nipe 300 miles east of Bermuda during a five hour takeover. Captain Jorge Navarro and ten crewmen were ashore in Chesapeake Bay while others remained aboard under surveillance. The group manipulated navigational gear and issued threats to secure their escape to the United States. The State Department indicated the defectors would be allowed to stay.

Couple Safe After Nights On Mountain Peak

Two young summer workers missing since Wednesday on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park were found safe Friday. Joyce Mast 18 of Richmond Indiana and Richard Boldrey 20 of St. Clair Shores Michigan described themselves as famished but in good health. They survived a brutal storm with lightning and heavy rain, then circled the peak and reached the Glacier Gorge area on Thursday before reaching a trail back toward Estes Park.

Carnival Worker Held Without Bail On Murder Count

Clarence Austin a 25 year old carnival worker from Atlanta was charged with murder in municipal court for the slaying of Woodrow Wilson Floyes a 30 year old carnival worker in Mobile Alabama after an early morning argument in front of the Old Hickory Inn. Witnesses Mrs Floyes and John Edwards 32 Austin Texas were held on 25000 bond as material witnesses. Preliminary hearing set for next Wednesday at 2 p m.

Space agency eyes manned orbital flight later this year

The space agency announced no further suborbital flights are needed and plans a possible manned orbital mission around the earth may occur late this year.

Freshmen: 372 Graduates Head to 27 Iowa Colleges

Sunday's Gazette will publish a piece naming 372 Cedar Rapids area graduates from Jefferson Washington Regis and St Patrick high schools starting college this fall. 267 will attend 27 Iowa colleges and 105 study at 73 other state schools. Governor Erbe and Maggert away for National Guard camp

Neither Gov. Erbe nor Maggert was reachable Friday as they were reported to be at Camp Ripley Minnesota for national guard exercises. Russell Ross said he knew nothing about a mass mailing and noted the governor receives about 25 picture requests daily, usually filled with glossy prints. The officials received a more expensive matte finish photo, contrasting with the glossy prints.

Johnson to visit Berlin to reassure West Germany

Vice President Johnson will fly to Berlin with Gen. Lucius Clay to meet Chancellor Adenauer and West Berlin Mayor Brandt. He carries a message replying to Brandt’s demand for action on the Berlin border and will assess the crisis on the spot.
