Appraiser of Nixon Papers Is Indicted
CHICAGO AP The president of the Chicago Public Library Board has been indicted on charges of lying to IRS agents in connection with Nixon's historical papers. Ralph Newman a literary appraiser and Lincoln scholar was hired by Nixon to appraise papers donated to the U.S Archives. A one count indictment charges that Newman lied three times to IRS investigators in 1973 in Chicago. Newman already faces charges of helping falsify Nixon's income tax returns. The new indictment alleges he provided a six page timetable of his involvement with Nixon's papers that backed up earlier statements about a disputed 576 000 deduction on Nixon's 1969 federal tax return. The offenses carry up to five years and a 10000 fine.
