Welty Way and the Bombers clash Sunday in a championship round after a sequence of games at Gene's Tavern and Ottumwa Miller's D.M. The D.M. Bombers faced Collins Radio and C&P Vending as Welty Way posted several wins with scores ranging from 1 to 11, setting up a decisive final.
In Clear Lake Butt'r Top tops Gene's Tavern Sioux City and Welty Way as the state fast pitch softball tournament concludes. Denny Linderbaum and Kenny Van der Zwaag starred for Welty Way and Gene's respectively, while Des Moines Bombers faltered with clutch hits. Gene’s Tavern, led by Vander Zwaag, defeated Welty 6-3 and then beat the Bombers in back to back games to claim the title.
DeWayne Tiny Lund, a 43 year old fishing camp operator from Cross South Carolina and longtime Iowa racer, died in a six car collision eight laps into the Talladega 500. Buddy Baker won the race and learned of Lund's death after victory lane, breaking down in tears. Richard Petty offered brief condolences as others recalled Lund's size and racing record including 41 Grand American wins. Lund leaves a wife and son Christopher.
Jeri Sumner of Cedar Rapids Iowa School of Goju Karate won first in kata and placed third in novice women's kumite at the Cedar Rapids event. Fellow competitor Wayne Griffioen also earned a third in brown belt kata and second in breaking.
Beth Daniel, 18, from Charleston S C, won the U S Women s Amateur at Newton Mass with a 3 and 2 victory over Donna Horton 21 of Jacksonville Fla Daniel said she will keep playing as long as it is fun and dreams of national titles.
In Toronto, Manuel Orantes of Spain defeated Ilie Nastase 7-6 6-0 6-1 to win the men's singles title as Nastase stopped trying early in the second set after a disputed call in the first set tiebreaker.
JoAnn Washam of Fort Worth Texas seized victory at the inaugural Patty Berg Classic in St Paul Minnesota finishing 13 under par 206 to win the $45 000 prize. She credited steady play and an early eagle on three as turning points amid near misses over her three year pro career.
St Wenceslaus improved to 12 wins in 13 games by topping St Pius in parish league slo pitch. Other results included St Pat's 7 All Saints 3, St Matthew's 10 5 over Immaculate Concepcion, and St Ludmils 10 0 over St Joseph's.
Butch Hartman held a one-hour delay before winning the 100 mile Allen Crowe Memorial late model stock car race in Springfield. Ramo Stott of Keokuk, Iowa finished second in a Plymouth. Hartman extended his USAC stock car points lead to 1,590 while Stott stood at 1,470.
Eldon and Mike Brake of Cedar Rapids won the 17th Iowa Father Son Golf tournament in a sudden-death playoff after finishing regulation tied at one under par 72. Mike Brake, 28, sank a 20 foot birdie putt on the first hole of playoff to claim the title.
Newton Nite Hawks quarterback Stan Allspach threw two touchdown passes to Bob Buel and E. W Sites to beat Quad-Cities 20-0 in a Chicagoland Football league exhibition. Larry Fields scored on a two yard run in the first quarter as Newton moved to 1-1 in exhibition play.
Don Bies, an easygoing former club pro, finally wins the Greater Hartford Open in a playoff over Hubert Green. The 37-year-old beat a field that included strong challengers after a long run of near misses, making a 6-foot birdie on the second playoff hole to claim the title and $40,000.
Lon Nielsen of Belle Plaine rallied after two early bogeys to win the 17th annual Tournament of Champions at Atlantic Golf and Country Club. Nielsen shot 69 for a 208 total, four strokes ahead of Terry Miller who closed with 74 to finish third.
Osborn of Cedar Falls took the lead on lap 16 to win the 25 lap late model feature at Independence. Heat and semi results note Willy Kiingfus Tom Moore and others, with Osborn also finishing atop A feature and B feature lists. The report also mentions a separate roadrunner and golf round with scores, including Snead Nelson and Regalado in the playoff race.
In Rockton Illinois Scott Ovel of Cedar Rapids won the Formula Super V race at Blackhawk Farms, driving a Lola T324 to 82 mph on the 1.8 mile course. It marked his third win of the season, with Joh Gerber of Cedar Rapids finishing sixth in Formula V.
