Public Art Push in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids gains pace
Iowa City plans to restore and expand public art with four new sculptures by Valery Kovalev placed in Black Springs Circle Park after donation funding cuts. Cedar Rapids houses a 41 piece collection valued at about 5.1 million dollars with a 3 million dollar cornerstone stained glass window in the Veterans Memorial Building. The city weighs allocating 1 percent of project costs to art, while existing funds have dwindled from 100000 annually in 2002 to 14750 today.

Agency to take over remaining cases of Cedar Rapids area coalition
The recovery coalition based at 1515 Hawkeye Dr in Hiawatha plans a new agency to handle the last active cases. The coalition’s $2 million budget largely came as a grant from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, with $1.3 million for materials and $500,000 for direct family assistance. About $200,000 remains for operating costs as staff shrink from a peak of roughly 15 to nine, with additional support via the state emergency jobs program and VISTA volunteers acknowledged. The city notes 1,300 flood damaged homes renovated of 5,390 damaged and about 1,300 more expected for demolition. Contact Steve Gravelle at (319) 398-5819.
