Recovery coalition shuts down after flood work in Linn County

After three summers of flood recovery, the Linn Area Long Term Recovery Coalition ends operations as Linn Area Community Organizations Active in Disaster forms to coordinate future disaster response. The center coordinated relief for families at 300 percent poverty level and logged 665000 volunteer hours at 640 sites with 1.3 million dollars in materials. The new group aims to continue the pipeline of resources and training for 18 representatives from 35 groups, meeting at Hawkeye Area Community Action Program offices.

Iowa City Donates Tree Sculptures From Local Family

Art Small and his family donate two sculptures carved 15 years ago by a Russian artist from an oak tree that fell on their property. The pieces depict Art Small and his late wife Mary Jo with children Martha Peter and Art III. The city will place them in Black Springs Circle Park near the former home, joining two Russian writer sculptures from the same tree owned by another family.

Cedar Rapids eyes expanded buy local rule

Cedar Rapids officials weigh a policy twist to extend local preference to Linn County firms. A council committee urged that a non Cedar Rapids business must have its own county buy local plan in place and grant the same preference to Cedar Rapids firms. A vote on August 24 was scheduled.

The Cedar Rapids City Council will vote on its buy local policy August 24. Procurement Committee member Kris Gulick says there could be flexibility in what Cedar Rapids seeks in return from Linn County communities if they are included. Marion Mayor Paul Rehn notes Marion’s buy local policy favors Marion first but covers all of Linn County and supports Cedar Rapids extending its policy.
