Cedar Rapids weighs tuneup for buy local program
The Cedar Rapids Procurement Committee will review the seven month old buy local program today. Council member Chuck Swore notes three options: limit incentives to flood impacted businesses, expand to all Linn County businesses, or scrap the program. Protests came from metro area businesses and the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. Stan Pfoff of Proft Electric in Marion urges expansion to all Linn County.

Iowa birds face perils from Gulf of Mexico oil spill migration
As fall nears, waterfowl wading birds and shore birds migrating from Iowa to the Gulf of Mexico risk oil coating feathers or ingesting contaminated prey. Officials warn scaup and redheads are most affected as pelicans and other species pass through Iowa on migration routes to Gulf coast wintering grounds.
