Cedar Rapids closes its 1964 summer playground season with graduation ceremonies for over 900 five year olds receiving diplomas and candy. Tot lets conclude with Thursday events while Kids League baseball continues. Four year olds will be honored next summer.
The Cedar Rapids Memorial Commission called a veterans convention for Sept. 22 at 7 30 p m to choose a veteran to fill the vacancy. Mayor Johnson’s term ends June 30 1965. Recording secretary Mrs. Tvrdik earns 15 a month, replacing Mrs. Walker who accepted a 10 month wage cut. Commission treasurer Sam Cohen says the $25 monthly pay is too high for six months work.
Cohen stated funds of 10000 to pave Rockford road area near Veterans Memorials and 15000 for the memorial room share. proposals to develop the Spanish American War room as a veterans memorial were discussed with no action taken. Cedar Rapids Veterans council chairman said plans are being formed. At State Fair Maquoketa Valley high school band will play August 28.
Des Moines reports Gov. Harold Hughes declared Howard and Mitchell counties disaster areas hit by drought this summer. Emergency status allows special loans and federal aid. the vacancy on the state board will be filled Monday, with Hughes choosing among four candidates after a meeting this week.
AP report notes a fatal two-vehicle crash four miles south of Monroe on Highway 14. The incident occurred Friday night as college all stars and Jowan were involved. details remain unclear. Local authorities investigate.
