Preserve adds 57 acres to Bird Preserve near Covington Cedar Rapids
The Bird Preserve near Covington and Cedar Rapids expanded with a second phase adding 57 acres to the 83 acres opened last fall. Funded equally by a $400,000 share from a $40 million conservation bond approved in 2016 and Kilberger foundation, which also funded a pavilion, parking, and a restroom. The land was named after Kilberger’s grandparents Clayton Jack and Libbie Bird, who owned it since the 1920s and would be proud of the public-access project. The preserve offers cross-country skiing, biking, hiking, and archery with no motorized vehicles allowed.
