Illinois study shows high teen smoking likely to persist
A University of Illinois education professor led a four year project analyzing 23 724 students in Winnebago county grades seven through 12. Data from 44 2 miles of processing cards found local youth who smoke regularly are unlikely to quit and smoking may reflect coping failure. The $184 500 federal grant supported research begun in 1966 across 62 schools with 13 graduate student analysts. Creswell reports aim to publish this fall.

Smoking patterns among Midwest youths rise in grades seven to nine
Creswell and colleagues analyze Winnebago county students showing increased smoking rates from seventh to ninth grade in 1966. The study links absent students and peer influence to smoking, noting girls smoke earlier than boys. Anti smoking education and teacher guided groups show promise in reducing rates.
