Olga Curtis reports that the QM Institute for the armed forces is developing future kitchen staples for civilians by 1959. From powdered eggs and cake mixes to instant coffee and dehydrated vegetables, military needs during World War II spurred civilian meals. The institute continues refining shelf-stable, no-refrigeration meals and new dehydrated tomatoes for space-saving, instant cooking.

Virginia Newton Weds Richard Hartsock at Riverside St Marys

Virginia Ann Newton of Riverside married Richard W. Hartsock of Chicago in a Riverside church ceremony attended by Marlene Donahue of Iowa City. The Rev. Walter Boeckman officiated. Junior King's Daughters circle meets at Mrs Popinger home

The Linn County Union of Junior King's Daughters met at 1431 Twenty ninth Street NE hosted by Mrs F C Popinger. Contributions to Camp Lookout totaled 58 dollars for equipment and swimming pool fund. Lookout circle presented a play while Shining Star circle planned games and entertainment. Hope circle hosted the event with Mrs Robert D Wright giving devotions.

Mothers tea planned by eight Lo-on-o Camp Fire members

Eight members of the Lo-on-o Camp Fire group met at leader Mrs. Frederick Schueler’s home at 150 Twenty first street SW. They planned a May 13 mothers tea to serve as a trail seeker rank requirement with assistant leader Mrs. Milo Savel and sponsor Mrs. Gale Postel assisting.

Monaco Royal Return From Vatican State Visit

Thomans gathered to watch the princely couple depart for the Vatican for a long planned state visit with the Pope. The Pontiff awarded Rainier a pontifical gold medal for his eighteenth anniversary in the chair of St Peter and gave Grace a rare rosary. Caroline and Rainier presented the Pope with a gold medal and a confectionary box of sugar canes as keepsakes of Princess Caroline's birth. The medal by Cartier Paris features St Devote and the Monaco seal with the date.
