Polio Shots Scheduled in Jones County

The Jones County Medical Society and the Jones County Polio Foundation announce a county wide inoculation program for ages 1 to 20 with first and second shots offered for $1 each. Centers in Monticello Anamosa and Wyoming run May 7 9 and 14 with June make up dates. Local doctors and civic groups supply staff under county polio chairman Mrs Alfred Snyder.

Four Iowans Are Given Guggenheim Fellowships

Four Iowans earned Guggenheim Fellowships for 1957. Paul H. Engle of the University of Iowa for poetry. Paul Lester Errington of Iowa State College for vertebrate population cycles. Herbert Gold of the Writers Workshop for fiction. and Don Kirkham of Iowa State for soils fertility in intense cultivation. The foundation, begun in 1925 by Simon and Mrs. Guggenheim, aims to support advanced scholarly work.

Minnesota lawmakers recalled a bill allowing 50 foot trucks and loads above 73 280 pounds after finding heavier weights could jeopardize federal funding for federally financed highways. Iowa recently passed a 50 foot truck bill with the existing 45 foot load limit unchanged.

Iowa Medical Society Names Life Members

At the Iowa State Medical Society convention in Des Moines about 1,500 physicians attended the second day. Fifteen doctors were elected life members for 50 years in practice and 30 years in the society, including Rowley, Hennessy, Cretzmeyer, Hill, Voss, Traister, Taylor and others from six Iowa cities. Ada Dunner was elected president of the Iowa chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association, with Rockwell named vice president and Croker as secretary-treasurer.

Olin High School Adds New Facility for Public Inspection

The Olin high school announces a new building will be open for public inspection next Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. In Norway the senior class play Mumbo Jumbo is set for Thursday at 8 p.m. In Anamosa the kindergarten roundup is planned Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Strawberry Hill school. Parents should bring birth certificates for children.

Waterloo Degree Team Wins Moose Contest

Waterloo won the degree team title from 36 teams as the Iowa Moose Association closed its three day spring conference in Mason City. The Waterloo team will represent Iowa Moose lodges in the national competition in Spokane Washington in August. Storm Lake finished second and Des Moines third. The state convention will be held in Cedar Rapids September 19 to 22.

Talle Republican who represents Iowa's second district wraps a six day district tour during the congressional Easter recess He visited 11 of 12 counties spoke at a Farm Bureau meeting in Fayette met with a four county group in Postville toured Clinton Machine Company and a new Jackson County hospital in Maquoketa spoke at DeWitt luncheon joined Bellevue fish fry and met voters in Anamosa Cedar Rapids Clinton and other communities He plans another extended tour after adjournment and heads to Washington to push a housing credit and interest rate bill targeting the 10000 to 16000 bracket as a banking and currency committee member He cited farm legislation post office service economics prudent foreign aid and housing credit as voter interests.

Des Moines Car Racers Prepare Drag Strip Outside City

DES MOINES AP Construction on a 3500 foot by 60 foot drag strip is under way on the Ernest Day farm four miles northwest of Des Moines. May 30 is targeted for a possible drag meet as Jim Haslett of the Greater Des Moines Council of Automobile and Motorcycle Clubs expects fewer teen traffic violations. Day and his three sons Dennis Larry and Steven are involved in the project.

Tipton Seeks Six Hundred for Recreational Program

Tipton aims to raise 600 dollars for a summer recreation program running June 10 to August 3 in the Tipton community, including swimming at the public pool. Only 155 dollars has been subscribed. Des Moines Boy Rescued After Missouri Car Thief Case

Eight year old Mike Norton returned home after being taken on a trip by 19 year old Robert Harriman of Marshalltown. Harriman admitted passing bad checks in Missouri and Iowa and faced a federal charge for transporting a stolen car. Mike’s mother said Harriman panicked and took the boy to help him flee toward the Mexican border.

Car thief confesses after chase ends in Missouri

Harriman admitted stealing a car in Mason City on Friday then drove to Des Moines to pick up Mike Norton before heading to Missouri. He side swiped a truck and abandoned the car. Mike flagged down a patrol car, while Hurkman eluded authorities for seven hours before surrendering.

A two car crash 24 miles south of Cincinnati fatally injured Melia Kirby 72. In Kossuth county a second collision near Algona killed Julius G. Studer 66. Studer’s wife and parents were hospitalized, while Carl Johnson of Algona had minor injuries.

Conservation Junkets To Be Scrutinized By Council

Executive Council will review convention trips at state expense by conservation commission representatives before authorizing further. A request asks three commission members and two staff to attend the American Association for Conservation Information convention in Biloxi Mississippi from May 21 to 26.
