President Eisenhower considers addressing the nation by radio and television to defend his 71.8 billion dollar budget and foreign aid program. White House and GOP leaders indicate discussion continues with Hagerty noting misrepresentation he aims to counter.
President Eisenhower told the National Council of the League of Women Voters at the White House that U.S. foreign aid is essential to keep small nations from turning to communism. He warned freedom at home depends on supporting economies abroad and warned others would fill any funding gap. The president cited nationalism as a powerful force and said nations will seek economic aid from any source if not from the United States.
In San Francisco 1954 Shermyn Martinez told Judge Curter that her husband fled after a brief wedding saying he was scared. He went to his mother in Lake County and an annulment was granted.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee delayed final action on Scotty McLeod’s ambassadorship to Ireland until Thursday amid doubts on confirmation. Green questioned McLeod’s suitability while McLeod defended his inquiry and signaled interest in diplomacy and possible future service.
Jack Hart, Armstrong Parking Garage manager, elected president of the Cedar Rapids Junior Chamber of Commerce for a one year term starting July 1. He succeeds William M. DuVall. New officers include Harry Whitehead Irvin Tucker and Dr Richard Holdman as vice presidents James Corell treasurer and Jack Bergstrom secretary. John Battin named state director from Cedar Rapids with council approval.
In Norwalk California a 26 year old woman Mary Lynn Thompson was electrocuted when wet feet touched an electric wire hung by her husband to keep the dog out of the flower beds. She was rushed to a hospital where she died.
Sioux Falls announces the city’s new official song written by Lloyd Norling from Evans ton. The decision was announced Tuesday.
A Delta Airlines official testified that he leaked a Civil Aeronautics Board decision to a Georgia Republican committeeman who profited on Northeast stock. Robert Snodgrass bought 1000 shares, earning about 2500 dollars after the run was granted, while Griffith claimed leaks were common.
Senator Byrd blasted Budget Director Percival Brundage and urged an eight to nine billion dollar reduction in Eisenhower's pending budget. He called for a new director devoted to economy, saying Brundage failed and spent unwisely. He proposed agency cuts of 5 to 10 percent and tax reforms to trim the deficit. He also outlined targeted corporate and income tax reductions and stressed debt reduction.
Iowa House members killed the controversial revenue measure and opened the question of a 2 percent sales tax starting July 1. The House voted 31 to 19 to adopt the tax committee report, sending the measure to conference for a second time with possible delay until final adjournment.
Miller Tuesday labeled the proposed flexible sales tax plan a yo-yo measure. The two leading exponents are Senators E Prentis of Mt. Ayr and J Ken dall Lynes of Plainfield, both Republicans.

Washington AP report says Dave Beck announced the Teamsters executive board will attend the Federation of Labor ethics committee hearing on charges the union is corruptly dominated. The hearing date was not specified.
