Hattie Amanda Dix 96 longtime Coggon resident dies at her son Alpha's home Monday night. She lived in Coggon 78 years and belonged to the Methodist church 61 years. Survived by three sons Lee Rex Alpha, two brothers Sumner Nietert and Arthur Nietert, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Linn county board on Tuesday rejected a fireworks permit for the Cedar Rapids Drive-In theater manager John G Narang. The decision follows a county attorney ruling that supervisors lack authority to issue permits and that such permits must come from city town councils or township trustees. The ruling reverses years of granting some permits and exempts fair associations with state aid.
An oral claim against Linn County for water damage to a Harnett Street NW home from last weekend’s heavy rain was referred to County Attorney Willis A. Glassgow by the board of supervisors. Paul Wood, living in the basement, says five feet of water flooded the basement after backwater from a clogged culvert pushed in a cement wall. He claims county road crews failed to clear tree stumps, some washing into a culvert mouth, causing the flood and property loss with no insurance. Supervisor Martin Wiley questioned the stump’s origin, citing a foreman who said the stump did not come from county tree cutting. The board will decide after legal review by Glassgow.

Funeral services for Emma Spaulding Ashlock widow of William Ashlock will be held at the Christian church in Center Point at 2 p.m. Thursday. The ceremony follows her death and the family later plans interment in Cedar Rapids.
Linn county officials met Wednesday with Cerro Gordo and Buchanan officials to study a road stabilization proposal. The Linn county board of supervisors set May 13 at 10 a.m. for a contract on 200 tons of liquid chloride, a solution for gravel and rock roads. They also placed on file a petition to establish a county road on a short segment of Midway drive NW west of Harnett street and granted Cedar Rapids school board approval for a water main to a new site on Johnson avenue.
A safe taken Monday night from the Canada Dry Bottling Company in Cedar Rapids was recovered Wednesday morning in a field near a country road northwest of Hiawatha. Deputy Harlan Snyder noted the safe was spotted by rural carrier R. J. Matthews. About $221 in cash was missing. checks and some company books remained. Police theorize the Cedar Rapids and Home Town Dairy safes were taken by the same thieves.
The Linn County Bar Association will sponsor a third and fourth high school district court day at the courthouse Thursday and Friday. Seniors from McKinley Marion Lisbon Viola and Springville attend as guests. Juvenile and automobile accident damage cases will be tried before a jury drawn from attending students, with Judges Charles Penningroth and Floyd Philbrick presiding.
Linn county supervisors discussed boarding patients at Cerro Gordo and Buchanan county homes to relieve the Mental Health Institute. Chairman Henry J. Hood and Supervisors Miles P. Sutera and Martin Wiley noted capacity limits at Linn county home and the availability of space in neighboring counties. They stressed only approved patients would be moved and planned further discussion with officials.
Attorneys made final arguments in the trial of James B. Huskey 55 of 517 Fourteenth street NE on a third offense drunk driving charge. Judge Floyd Philbrick said the case could go to the jury late Wednesday afternoon after Huskey’s March 13 arrest by Cedar Rapids police. Huskey was convicted on drunk driving charges in 1951 and 1952. The defense rested Wednesday morning while the estate rested late Tuesday.
Carrie Voss died April 6 and her will was admitted to probate on Wednesday naming her husband Joseph as sole heir and First Trust and Savings Bank as executor without bond. Also, Midwest Finance Co. won a 383.34 judgment against Floyd L. and Dorothy Edmonds in a promissory note suit. A divorce suit by Phyllis Oliphant against Howard Oliphant was dismissed by Phyllis Oliphant Tuesday.
Marengo teenager John Daugherty, 15, is in serious condition at University Hospitals in Iowa City after a Tuesday night shooting at the rear of his home. He suffered a right shoulder wound from a .22 caliber rifle and received blood transfusions. Authorities said he was the only person involved and ongoing investigation is underway.
