Plans to prepare land for a sanitation department garage in south Cedar Rapids were revealed on Thursday with a city council vote to open bids on May 17. The project includes a garage, shop, paint shop, and storage near the Cedar River, on city land between the railroad siding and A Street SW. The bid package covers clearing and grading the tract and building a levee, with an estimated cost of about 6500 dollars. The current sanitation department garage sits in the old city waterworks building behind Quaker Oats, recently sold to Quaker Oats for 90000 dollars.

Judge Benesh ruled Thursday that Cedar Rapids motorist Leonard Bamsey 26 of 1521 L Avenue NE was innocent of failing to yield to an emergency vehicle after a two day municipal court trial. The ruling cites that wind noise closed windows and radio, and Bamsey could not hear the siren due to physical factors, while officers were not derelict in their duty.

A special committee will be named by Dr. Gerald V. Coughlan, president of the Iowa State Medical Society, to study issues raised by an attorney general’s opinion on the status of specialists in hospitals. The house of delegates approved the move to meet with the Iowa Hospital Association to explore solutions, limited to this ruling.

About 250 Linn County seniors attended the district court day sponsored by the Linn County Bar Association where bar members tried fictitious automobile damage cases before student juries. Another 230 were scheduled to attend Friday with seniors from listed schools participating. this was the last of four district court days following events on April 1 and 2.

New York police say two men robbed a jeweler Wednesday night, taking jewelry valued at about 190000 and $1050 in cash. The heist occurred during business hours, with estimates placed on the stolen pieces by the victim and witnesses. No arrests were reported as of this filing.
One of three boys accused in a four car theft spree ending in a crash near Cedar Rapids won parole in district court. Judge Meyer shifted a 14 year old from Eldora State Training School to the New Providence Cottage Farm. Hearings for the other two boys are pending. James B. Huskey, 55, of 517 Fourteenth Street NE, was found guilty by a jury in Judge Floyd Philbrick's court of third offense drunk driving. The verdict came after a trial that began Monday. sentencing could range up to three years at Fort Madison penitentiary. Huskey had prior convictions in 1951 and 1952.
The trial of Raymond Plower, 20, charged with assault with intent to commit murder after he wounded his wife Jan 29, was continued to the next term by Judge Floyd Phil prick. Plower pled innocent April 3 and is free on $5,000 bond. The continuance, on his attorney’s request, delays a likely fall trial as Mrs. Plower, 36, recovered from a rifle wound allegedly fired during a dispute over fidelity.
The sheriff's office probed a break in at Regina Walsh's house two miles north of Viola. Glass breakage in a rear window marked entry. Walsh, a St Matthew's School teacher in Cedar Rapids, reported the disturbance occurred between 6 am Wednesday and 5 pm Thursday. The will of Clarence J Grissell died April 17 was admitted to probate with Ella and Anna Grissell named equal heirs and executrices without bond.
Marion Road would connect with a planned Rapids bypass from high ways 150 and 13 at the Y east of Marion to new highway 30. Officials say widening between Center Point Road and C Avenue, plus land dedication for east west and north south routes, will ease traffic and aid fire protection, with county supervisors to weigh future actions.
