Iowa Governor Ray Will Not Cancel Russia Trip Despite Possible Legislation Moves
Gov. Robert D. Ray said he will keep his May 16 30 trip to the Soviet Union, asserting lawmakers agreed not to push controversial bills to his desk while he is away. Senate Democrat leader George Kinley and others back the understanding, despite concerns about bills bypassing Ray’s signature. Ray noted the three day limit for signing or vetoing bills may be unclear when not presented in person and would adjust plans if needed.

Iowa House Delays Final Vote On Election Law Revisions
Des Moines Iowa lawmakers move into the third day of debate on a sweeping election reform bill. A defeated amendment would have allowed non declared voters to participate in party primaries with a limit to one party ticket. The chamber also reversed a previous repeal of straight-ticket voting, a change supported by Gov. Ray who backs either method.
