Tim Sevecik of Toledo was found guilty by a Tama county district court jury of assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury for an Feb 13 incident at a Tama tavern. He struck Curtis Davenport after calling him obscene names. Sevcik remains on probation from a 1973 assault conviction. sentencing is set for May 30.
US ambassador to Israel Kenneth Keating is in intensive care at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital recovering from a mild heart attack. Unconfirmed reports from 30 years ago claimed American and Russian forces met near Torgau, 31 miles northeast of Leipzig.
A University of Michigan professor says lower back pain from lifting heavy objects accounts for 20 to 30 percent of all medically related absenteeism in American industry.
The council expects 75 percent of the land purchase cost to be reimbursed by the FAA with the remainder covered by cash on hand and user revenues. Mayor Don Canney argues the only taxpayer cost is the referendum, while opponents question the need for 1 200 extra acres and future airport expansion. Parks Commissioner Stan Reinis warns about potential long term costs for relocation if the airport cannot expand.
The Hawkeye Labor Council narrowly voted 18 to 17 against endorsing the May 22 bond to buy land at the airport. President George Tresnak cited intra union disagreement as the reason to take no position. The council also refused to oppose rate increases by Iowa Electric Light and Power Co, saying a stance could hurt union workers.

A Des Moines AP report says a joint legislative subcommittee voted to urge lawmakers to override Gov. Robert Ray's item veto on an appropriations bill. The bill limited hiring for two state agencies and sparked the veto action.
Sen. Lowell Jenkins, a Democrat from Montrose, says the dispute is about separation of powers. Ray vetoed a section of an appropriations bill, capping staff at 28 in the Iowa Geological Survey General Office, four in the Iowa Coal Research Project, and 30 in the Natural Resources Council.

The Linn county judicial magistrate appointing commission nominates three candidates for the full-time post. Cedar Rapids attorneys James Bennett and Brent Harstad join J Eric Heintz of Solon. Judges will meet next Tuesday to choose one. Heintz’s residency rule applies from July 1.
A 17-year-old Cedar Rapids youth, Kelley Johnson, pleaded guilty in Linn district court to a reduced manslaughter charge for the Sept 1 death of John Beving at the elderly man’s residence. He had faced murder charges tied to a robbery during which Beving was killed. Johnson will withdraw his appeal of a transfer to juvenile court, and is slated for sentencing May 30 at 3 p.m. The state will seek a sentence up to eight years.
Cedar Rapids city council heard a bid to pave Thirty third Street NE from Prairie Drive to Center Point Road. August Blume recalled a two year old denial after objections by neighbors, noting many have since sold homes and bought new cars. Public Improvements Commissioner Richard Phillips announced a public hearing on the 1975 paving program for May 7.
Charles R. Heiden age 26 of 1250 Thirtieth Street NE is charged with breaking and entering to steal about 800 dollars in goods from rural Mt Vernon resident John Bartosh. Bartosh saw two men and a woman flee with items. one man flashed a pocket gesture as if holding a gun. Heiden was arrested by Linn deputies Tuesday and held in county jail pending arraignment.
Supreme Court Justice William Douglas, 76, entered New York University Medical Center's Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine Tuesday to further his recovery from a stroke that left him partially paralyzed several months ago.
