DES MOINES AP The Iowa house approved a bill 64 to 37 raising the gasoline tax from 4 to 5 cents a gallon. The extra revenue about 7.5 million dollars annually must be spent only on improving graveled primary roads and cannot be used to modernize or widen existing paved primary roads.
President Eisenhower told reporters he is ready to confer anywhere to push for peace in Korea but is waiting to see how developments unfold. He disclosed no Kremlin reaction to his world peace plan and urged flexible defense spending based on living standards, not fixed dates. He spoke on housing funds, trade amendments, atomic power, and personnel policy.
Washington insiders say a White House conference with President Eisenhower outlined soon to be announced sharp reorganizations of the state and defense departments. The overseas information service and Point Four would move from State to an independent agency with Mutual Security Director Stassen to supervise Point Four. The Pentagon would cut boards and personnel to boost efficiency while clarifying JCS responsibilities to improve coordination with Defense Secretary Wilson. No standby high command is discussed.

In Birmingham Alabama a 19 year old fortune teller Bessie Adams told a customer his mother was fine his son was safe in Korea and his wife was running with his best friend. Police reports contradicted the claims revealing falsities. She paid $125 and received a 180 days suspended jail sentence.
Roy E. MacArthur a 34 year old Transocean Airlines pilot was arrested in Oakland after exchanging five ounces of heroin for 1200 dollars with state narcotics inspector Vincent Chasten who posed as a moneyed crime lord. Chasten said he had previously bought 250 dollar portions of heroin and that the pilot planned to supply enough heroin to retail for over two million dollars.
Senator McCarthy of Wisconsin does not plan to run in 1956 citing his Catholic faith as an obstacle while Madison State Journal reports he believes he could not win and would wreck his party if he pursued a bid. He reportedly knows he could not win the presidency.
Cedar Rapids recorded 75 at 2 30 p m as pleasant night gave way to a warm day with the state seeing its second warmest spring day. Storm centers approached from the southwest and northwest as showers were forecast for Friday and Saturday.
Cedar Rapids detectives catalogued 44 clothing articles from the homes of four young women arrested for shoplifting. In four days of exchange the Reds have repatriated 400 allied troops, while the U.N. has returned 2,000 Communists including 700 Chinese scheduled to go home.
