Cedar Rapids police learned Tuesday of the arrest in Jersey City New Jersey of John H Morris who has admitted to Jersey City police the passing of a bad check in Cedar Rapids on February 20 Morris used the name Alvin Kabaker while operating in Cedar Rapids Three bad checks each for thirty dollars were cashed in Cedar Rapids by a man who identified himself as Kabaker The Kabaker checks were cashed at Cartwrights Decorating store Gordon Van Tine Company and Sherwin Williams Company Cedar Rapids police have sent a warrant for him but expect he will not be returned as he is wanted by police in many cities for similar offenses His record includes larceny in Sacramento and a hotel robbery in Seattle He has also been arrested in Honolulu.
The Legion of Merit was conferred on Franklin D Roosevelt Jr by Rear Admiral Monroe Kelly in a brief New York ceremony attended by his mother. The award honors his meritorious conduct as commander of the destroyer escort Alvert M Moore on January 21 1945 in action against a Japanese submarine west of Luzon.
William Waggoner of 1033 Eighth Street NW is treated at St. Luke's hospital for a head injury from falling through a glass window at the Bow um 124 Third Street NE Tuesday morning. No condition details pending X ray results.

William Garrison 65 an employee in the Gazette maintenance department for 21 years died in a Glenwood Minnesota hospital after a recent heart attack. Born March 12 1882 in Monticello he married Delia Lewisohn February 12 1904. Survived by wife two daughters one son 14 grandchildren two brothers and a sister. Funeral arrangements pending.
Mrs. Joseph Tinkey 54 of Edgewood died at 4 45 am Monday in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a lingering illness. Born near Greeley February 22 1893 she lived in the area all her life. Surviving are her husband mother Newell son Jean and Mrs Carl Burbridge all of Edgewood two granddaughters three brothers and two sisters. Services will be held in Edgewood at a time to be announced.
Mrs Gustav Broukal 62 of Cedar Rapids route 1 died at 7 30 am Tuesday in a local hospital after a brief illness. Born in Czechoslovakia Oct 28 1884 she lived in Cedar Rapids 43 years. Survived by husband and son Eugene M Broukal. Services at Kuba funeral home with time to be announced. Friends may call after noon.
William Hungerford, 32, of 1310 Avenue NE, was charged with reckless driving after police stopped him on First Avenue at Twenty-ninth Street NE. He was hospitalized at St Luke's due to a brain concussion from a prior Aurora, Illinois accident two weeks earlier.
The Cedar Rapids School Board heard objections to a new policy eliminating January entrance and promotion after 12 years. Neighbors questioned early entry for a five year old, while former Edgewood officials protested transporting students to Cedar Rapids schools amid annexation. Board paused for Superintendent Parker’s report.
Gerald Edleman Frank C Brown and Loren Hammon were fined 100 each by Justice H R Churchill for operating without a dealer license. Edleman and Brown were arrested Monday and Hammon Tuesday, by Deputy Harlan Snyder. Total fines reach 1500 from Mead’s ongoing state safety investigation with 17 arrests to date. two men pled innocent.

Adams Lamp Company of Chicago seeks $300 from Alex Kalinsky for purchases on November 7, 1946. J. Aubrey San De Fur and Elsie G. San De Fur seek $1,318.70 from Raymond W. Link and LaVonne M. Link on a December 13, 1946 promissory note. George L. Skvor sues Glenn B. Lacock and Ethel M. Lacock for $500 on a January 22, 1946 note, plus 7 percent interest since March 1.

Carl Keelin of 1329 B avenue NW died Sunday. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Teahen chapel conducted by Rev. Rodney C. Gould. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Three defendants faced federal liquor law charges in U S District Court. Carl James Gregory of Chicago pled guilty to six counts arising from Cedar Rapids violations in 1945 46 with sentencing in Waterloo on May 13. Abe Grossman of Minneapolis received concurrent six month terms plus fines and custody. Earl Knowles of Sioux City drew a six month sentence suspended on probation with a $100 fine amid illness in his family. cases were transferred for action here. Assistant U S Attorney William B Danforth led the prosecution.
Services for Mrs Edward Makovsky of Ely route 1 who died Sunday will be held at the Janeba chapel at 1 30 p m Wednesday conducted by Rev Ludvik Burian. Burial is planned at Rogers Grove cemetery with visitation at the funeral home.
A pretrial conference in the $22,500 mental anguish damage suits against Western Union Telegraph Co. is set for June 12 in U S district court. The Telegraph's motion to strike was overruled in the final April session. The complaints, moved from Jones County district court, are by Mrs. C. F. Mitchell and her daughter Lucille Smith. The suits arise from a late telegram delivery to Mrs. Mitchell about Earl Smith’s illness, sent by Mrs. Smith to her mother in Florida, arriving after the grandson’s death and funeral.
Cedar Rapids board of education moved to float a 4 300 000 bond issue to fund a stadium two high schools and renovations. Chapman and Cutler was retained to prepare the bond program. voter approval in a special school district election is required. Legislation awaiting senate approval may delay a post July 4 election date.
Cedar Rapids superintendent John N. Nichols and assistant Wayne A. Bly returned from Indianapolis where the Midwest conference of recreation executives met April 17 to 19. About 150 delegates from 15 states attended. Nichols reported Cedar Rapids garden programs by the playground and recreation commission. The Iowa association of municipal recreation workers elected officers: Eugene A. Trowbridge president, John N. Nichols vice president, Mrs. Hilda Noel Luke secretary.
Orville O. Wright of 411 First Avenue SW pleaded not guilty in district court to grand larceny. He was questioned by police after a diamond ring theft from Ginsberg's Jewel Box at 205 Second Street. The case is scheduled for April court proceedings.

Pvt. William Anderson 25 of Scott Field Illinois pled guilty to murder in the slaying of Mrs. Irene E. Elsing. Circuit Judge Ralph Maxwell sentenced him to life in the Illinois state penitentiary. He confessed beating and strangling the East St. Louis divorcee after she threatened exposure over jealousy concerns. Her body was found in the Mississippi River near Crystal City Missouri last Sept. 9.
A Sunday morning fire on the Stephen Halpin farm near Hazleton destroyed a brooder house and 500 baby chicks. The blaze is believed to have been started by a brooder vent or device.

Annie Y. Smith a Cedar Rapids teacher at Taylor school for 43 years will retire effective Sept 1 following board of education action Monday night. She is a Coe College graduate who came to Cedar Rapids from Mt. Vernon in 1904. The vote also approved resignations at Polk and Arthur schools and new appointments in kindergarten and elementary grades with salaries listed for each post.

Two capacity audiences of 800 heard the third annual city wide Catholic school music festival at Immaculate Conception school auditorium. Sister Mary de Lourdes directed with a training team from Mount Mercy and Immaculate Conception. The mixed chorus of 206 voices was encored after performances by St. Matthew's, St. Wenceslaus, and Mount Mercy groups. The festival closed with Solemn high mass celebrated by Msgr. Molloy and Mass participation by festival students.
Flying Farmers, private pilots visiting for the airport opening, will be guests of honor at the Young Men's Bureau dance Saturday evening at Chamber headquarters. Farm bureau young married couples receive special invitations, with bingo on the third floor and music by the orchestra on the fourth. Dr. J. O. Downing chairs the dance, with John Tellier Dan Schwitters and Lloyd Holmes assisting.

Grahl U S Senator B B Hickenlooper Rep Henry O Talle W C Mentzer of United Air Lines and Guy Richardson and Lester G Orcutt of the state aeronautics commission will be in the speakers stand for the 1 30 p m Sunday program. A 15 car convoy will move guests from Chamber of Commerce headquarters to the airport where a band will play and four flights of Army Navy Marine and Coast Guard planes arrive before the formal program. Mentzer will arrive Saturday afternoon aboard a special plane christened Mainliner Cedar Rapids from Chicago. The airlines party includes Allen T Towne and others aboard the plane. The banquet Saturday night will be at the Montrose hotel with a large guest list and 280 tickets available by mail with checks.
Three former servicemen on the U S Army recruiting roster announced in the Federal building. Raymond Buehler 23 sworn in at Fort Omaha has three and one half years wartime Army service and re enlists for three years at Fort Jackson. Navy men Gordon E Wilson and Harold D Hogan both 23 from Monticello also enlisted and chose coast guard service. Other recruits include Orlie Mes kim en Shellsburg Robert C Elsey and James E Franks.
Donald Wayne Janssen of 2920 Oakland Avenue and Grant E Albertson of 1825 Eighth Street NW have enlisted in the regular navy and are ordered to San Diego for boat training. George T Knapp of Marion and William Heiney of Iowa City also enlisted, announced by the U S navy recruiting substation in the Federal Building. Knapp had previously served in the navy.
