Day in Cedar Rapids reports that interruptible natural gas users must secure larger quantities of alternate fuels next winter due to an expected gas curtailment. The item cites an Iowa Electric Light and Power official and notes the risk of fuel shortages affecting industrial and commercial users.
Consumer prices rose 0.6 percent in March easing from February’s 1 percent jump. Food costs fell short of earlier gains while nonfood commodities slowed to 0.4 percent. Gasoline and motor oil edged higher but fuel oil and coal continued to climb.

Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Co plans a 650000 kilowatt coal fired generating station on 1600 acres along the Mississippi River five miles south of Muscatine Iowa in Louisa county. Ownership would be shared by Iowa Illinois and partners with possible joint ownership by Durant Tipton and Wilton. The plant is expected to begin producing electricity by January 1983 with cost exceeding 600 million dollars.
