At 9 57 Friday two people were taken to Mercy hospital after a collision between a car and a city sanitation truck at First avenue and L street west. Driver Joseph Melichar 34 of 510 Sixth avenue SE received a right shoulder injury and right clavicle fracture and was released. James Kunz 17 of 425 Memorial drive SE sustained neck back and possible skull injuries. The Kunz car was eastbound on First avenue and the truck on L street when the crash occurred.
President Carter pledged to fight for a five cent per gallon gasoline tax if U S consumption tops energy targets. The plan would rise by five cents yearly up to 50 cents with tax credits estimated at about $25 per person per year for each nickel. Families could receive refunds to offset higher crude oil costs, while most credits would come as income tax relief. He cautioned about certainties on returning all money and noted it would mostly be tax credits. Carter declined Ford criticisms and said it is unlikely the U S will sell battle tanks to Zaire amid policy discussions.
