City briefs report Knights of Columbus will convene at 8 p.m. in clubrooms and list a Voyage of Discovery movie screening. Events include a Lenten roast beef supper at St. James Methodist on April 22 and 23 from 4 30 to 7 30 p.m. and other civic activities.
The Cedar Rapids school board approved sixteen new teachers on Monday night as eight resignations were accepted. New hires include eleven elementary staff with varied degrees and salaries around 3100 to 3440 dollars, and additional contracts for Terrence Carlson Lola March Betty Debban Charles Debban and Freda Kelting among others. The board also granted a John Hay Whitney fellowship leave for Julia Crew extended Doris Larson maternity leave and appointed custodians Lewis Meyers and Charlie Hubacek.
James E. Hartman, 23, was fined $102.50 by Mayor E. C. Carnal for reckless driving stemming from a Saturday night auto collision. Hartman was cited Sunday on the charge.

Courthouse Boys' Town files suit in Center Point area to invalidate the will of George K. Ward and seek control of his estate. The petition argues a March 6 will left property to Charles and Elza Bills and then to Boys' Town, with joint wills dating from October 1950 naming the Bills as sole heirs after the brothers' deaths.
Judge Floyd Philbrick directed a jury to return an innocent verdict for Herbert Hope Smith 52 of Ely in a second offense drunken driving case after key witness Lowell Myers testified the state failed to tie Smith to the offense. Smith was arrested last June after allegedly driving into Myers farm yard.
Arden C. Jordan of Des Moines faced four charges in justice court. He allegedly passed two false checks for ten dollars at the Roosevelt hotel in January and a false fifteen dollar check to Lester Melsha in Cedar Rapids, with a fourth charge for hotel defrauding. Bond was set at 200 dollars and he remained in county jail.
The Linn county board of supervisors on Tuesday purchased an emergency power generator for the Linn county home at a cost of 3589.75, following the April term grand jury recommendation. The Duplex make from Martin-Roosa Tractor and Equipment Company will prevent outages affecting the home’s sprinkler, heating, and lighting systems during storms or bad weather.
Judge Charles Penningroth presides as final arguments are ready in a 1952 auto accident suit filed by R. Gordon Walker against Raymond E. and Marilyn Roach. Walker seeks 639.41, the Roaches counterclaim 332.52. Jury panel includes Cedar Rapids residents Anna Kasper Paul Dvorak Robert Crane Frances Flynn Florence Obstfeld Edwin Hellwig Howard Nandl Albert Cahalan Beatrice Dorman Richard McIntyre Robert Vogel Marion and Duane Ely Lisbon.
Two men pled guilty to drunk driving charges late Monday and were fined 300 dollars plus costs each by Judge Floyd Philbrick. Raymond Everett, 42, faced the plea and sentence in the case.
of 1116 Sixth street SE and Frank DeShaw, 43, of Central City. Both men were allowed to pay their fine on the installment plan, Everett $50 down and $50 a month and DeShaw $35 down and $35 a month. DeShaw was arrested Saturday in Central City. Everett was arrested Friday in Mt. Vernon.
The Public Finance Service Company dismissed a chattel mortgage foreclosure action filed in October. Dismissal was without prejudice against Richard A Lipscomb and Donna J Lipscomb and with prejudice against Troy V Winegar and Evelyn Winegar.
Tuesday Arling J. Dice files a damage suit against Everett D. and Harriett M. Lorence seeking 550 dollars over a livestock matter in a state district court.
Pvt. Louis Kerkstra from Byron City Michigan recalls a month of march after capture on April 24 1951. He says hot water was the only medicine for prisoners and some died from loss of appetite. He adds camp food was bad but mandatory to eat to avoid death due to tuberculosis.

Henry T. Schiller 1904 12 21 born Wahpeton North Dakota died at 9 p.m. Monday in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a brief illness. Survived by wife Ethel son James daughter Joan brother Lee and four sisters. Services set 11 a.m. Thursday at Chapel of Memories Cedar Memorial Cemetery with Rev Allan E. Schoff. Brady mortuary open 4 p.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday.

Cedar Rapids resident Albert Clinton Johnson 41 died Tuesday at the Mental Health Institute after a long illness. Born November 14, 1872 in Forestville Ohio, he was janitor at Petersen Bakery and later the Guaranty Bank. Surviving wife Orlena. three sons Bernie Lorain and David of Cedar Rapids. daughter Letha Paul of Mt Vernon. three grandchildren. Service 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Chapel of Memories. visitation 4 p.m. Wednesday to noon Thursday at Brady mortuary.
Frances Shank 88 widow of John Shank of 113 Eleventh Avenue SW Cedar Rapids died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Tuesday after a lingering illness. Born in Czechoslovakia she came to the United States in 1876. Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Frank Beals Cedar Rapids two sons Rudolph Cedar Rapids Henry Joliet five grandchildren and three great grandchildren and a brother Peter Hac Lincoln Neb. Kuba funeral home Thursday afternoon with time to be announced friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

U S Army sergeant Walter H. Mitchell of Greenville Tennessee says many sick and wounded captives were not released in the Korea prisoner exchange. He cites at least 20 men untreated and describes the hole or jug punishment for offenses, calling Red medical care poor and food inadequate. He is glad to be back in Freedom Village.
Charles M Berry a retired employee of the Railway Express Company in Cedar Rapids died in Santa Monica California Monday after a lingering illness. A Spanish American war veteran he moved to Santa Monica about ten years ago. Survived by his wife Clara a son Harold of Oak Park NL and two grandchildren. Services tentatively planned at Santa Monica.
