Miners ignore May 5 strike call amid coal contract fight
About 80 000 AFL affiliated bituminous miners in the Appalachian field plus 20 000 in Illinois and Kentucky will not heed the May 5 strike call issued by the United Mine Workers in New York. PMA leader Joe Ozanic says Lewis cannot order a nationwide soft coal shutdown and will not go through with it. The PMA claims majority in Appalachia and will seek recognition as the bargaining agent, threatening action under the labor relations act. The UMW had ordered a complete shutdown of soft coal mines if no contract is signed by May 3, with 125 000 additional miners potentially idled in three states, as a two-year contract expired April 1.
