Iowa Gov George A Wilson Gains Broad Control In Reorganization
Observers say Gov George A Wilson becomes the most powerful Iowa chief executive under the dome as the legislature completes centralization of the highway patrol bureau of investigation police radio system securities inheritance tax and beer and cigarette tax collection plus some commerce enforcement functions. The senate bill to add the motor vehicle department remains pending in the house while several major departments stay under elected officials. Secretary of State Earl G Miller who lost patrol and securities faces the measure. Rep Dean W Peisen calls the move desirable and argues it gives the governor needed power to act.
