Iowa contractor registration law catches many in Linn Johnson counties

About one fifth of Linn County contractors and a third in Johnson County fail to register with the Iowa Division of Labor under a four year old law. First offense fines can reach 500 dollars, up to 5,000 for repeats. Only one state investigator means most go uncited, though Cedar Rapids issued 13 citations recently. Registration costs 25 dollars for two years and requires unemployment insurance and workers compensation evidence for businesses with employees. The law aims at consumer protection by ensuring compliance.
