Production rises boost returns for high butterfat herds
A Iowa State survey shows dairy herds averaging near 300 pounds of butterfat yield nearly twice the labor income of 230 pound herds. High producers, fed more protein and nutrients, gain about $2,071 per cow compared with $1,135 for medium producers and $1,061 for low producers. Dual purpose cows earn even less, while feeding strategy and market factors explain much of the profit difference.
