Silent Treatment Boosts High School Grammar Skills

CHICAGO AP: Lavonne Mueller of DeKalb Illinois used nine weeks of written only communication for sophomore classes to improve grammar writing. In two semesters the silent groups showed greater improvement in grammar and fewer errors than traditional oral instruction, aided by immediate error correction and visual aids.

Silent Students Gain Confidence Despite Teacher Burnout

Questionnaires show silent students felt more confident in writing after nine weeks, and closer to their teacher. Mrs. Mueller notes the hard work nearly pushed them to quit and cites budget cuts that will end the silent approach as class sizes grow.

Psychiatrist Silvano Arieti to Speak at Cornell College

New York City psychiatrist and schizophrenia expert Silvano Arieti will lecture at Cornell College in Arm strong hall room 112 Friday at 4 p.m. The talk, titled Art of the Schizophrenic, contrasts modern art with schizophrenic art and suggests clues to human psyche mysteries. Arieti, Italian-born and educated at Pisa, Columbia, and Yale, is a professor at New York Medical College. He authored Interpretation of Schizophrenia, won the 1975 National Book Award, and holds multiple honors including the Frieda Fromm Reichmann award. Sponsored by psychology and art departments.

Cornell Students Join Social Organizations

Ninety nine Cornell college students accepted spring bids to join social groups on campus. Groups are independent of national fraternities and sororities, with members living in college dormitories and some engaging in community service. Eligible after one semester, groups evolved from 19th century literary societies. Read as a roster of new members from Cedar Rapids, Marion, Anamosa, Independence, Mount Vernon, North English and Wellman, with names and group affiliations such as Gammas and Thetas. Newlywed Kobberdahl Reception Held in Cedar Rapids

Mr and Mrs Edwin Trachta of Cedar Rapids hosted a Saturday reception at the Ponderosa ballroom Walford for their son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Wayne Kobberdahl of Council Bluffs. About 150 guests attended. The Kobberdahls were married March 12 in Council Bluffs.
