Obituary highlights Fritz McPartland civic leader dies at 83
Thomas F. Fritz McPartland 83 formerly of Linn boulevard SE Cedar Rapids died at a Waterloo care center. Born May 10 1892 he married Ruby Christen on May 2 1916 in Cedar Rapids. A noted sports and civic figure he umpired in the Mink league and in college and pro games and coached Coe College in 1925 and Marion Indians in 1926. He served in local clubs and helped push creation of a municipal airport and Memorial Stadium. Survived by a brother two daughters two sons seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services Monday 10 a.m. at St Matthew's Cedar Rapids. Burial Mt Calvary Cemetery.

Air Force ROTC unit at Coe College to close
The air force ROTC detachment at Coe College will close in August as part of nationwide cutbacks. Lt. General Furlong cited declining force levels and budgets. Coe will be the smallest college with an ROTC unit. 11 detachments close this year, 21 on probation, 22 closed in June 1973. Current sophomores and juniors can finish ROTC requirements on campus, then commission. Colonel James Lee noted irony in last year’s large senior class and 24 commissioned officers. An Iowa U transfer plan may allow Coe cadets to finish at Iowa City if needed.
