Man Found Guilty of Habitual Criminal Statute

John L. Schaepperkoetter, 33, of Cedar Rapids, found guilty by Linn district court jury of larceny of a motor vehicle and prior prison commitments. Jury also confirmed three prior convictions on breaking and entering, robbery with aggravation, and related sentences, with sentencing set for April 21.

Senate approves $20 million state aid to cities and counties

DES MOINES AP legislation to pump 20 million in state aid to cities and counties passes the Senate 41 to 3 and moves to the house. The bill would divide 15 million for municipalities and 5 million for counties for residents in unincorporated areas, up from last year’s 12 million and 4 million respectively. Sen. Lowell Jenkins notes per capita increases to 7.18 for cities and 6.70 for counties compared with 5.74 and 5.36 a year ago.

Man Held on Drug Charge

Michael D. Thornes twenty of the Sunrise mobile home court was held on one thousand dollars bond in Linn county jail on a possession of a controlled substance charge. Police found an unknown substance in Thornes possession when arrested for a driver license violation Friday. Preliminary tests indicated the substance was cocaine and he was arrested on the drug charge Monday night.

Man Burns Over 90 Percent Body In Cedar Rapids Fire

A 43 year old Cedar Rapids man identified as Arthur Moser remained in critical condition at University Hospitals in Iowa City after a mattress fire in a vacant rooming house at 824 Second Avenue SE. The blaze started about 5 15 p m Monday with cause tentatively due to careless smoking. Firefighters found Moser outside after he fled a smoke filled second floor then fell down a freight shaft and collapsed outside.

East Iowa Farmers Protest Route for I 380

A Vinton area farmers group presented a 201 name petition to the Iowa DOT commission opposing an I 380 route along railroad right of way between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. They argued the railroad path harms prime farmland and urged signed-claimant addresses be provided for mapping. no cost studies exist yet.

CB Operator Credited with Solving Crime

A citizen band radio operator alerted Cedar Rapids police to a vandalism in the 100 block of Third Street NE at 10:15 p.m. A 17 year old male was dismantling parking meters with a pipe wrench, stealing $7.60. He was arrested and turned over to the youth bureau.

A Cedar Rapids man was held on a $2000 bond in Linn County jail on a criminal trespass charge after police say Harley J. Kephart 44 attempted to force entry at 1113 Avenue SE. Cheryl Strain reported Kephart displayed a butcher knife and tried multiple doors before fleeing. an airborne unit helped locate him nearby.

Girl Hospitalized After Freak Mishap

Latricia Church four years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Church of 708 Twenty-seventh Street NW was in good condition at Mercy hospital in the days following a freak automobile accident Monday afternoon. Police say she fell from a car in the Church driveway when a front door was opened. the rear wheel then passed over her right leg.

Beer Rules Adopted for Linn Parks in 1976

Linn County Conservation Board approved new rules restricting beer in parks after 10 30 p m with exceptions for camping groups in tents up to 140 square feet. Vehicles abandoned over 24 hours may be towed. Violations carry up to 100 dollar fine or 30 days in jail. Budget discussions continue for 1976 77.

Robert Bliss Dies Funeral Is Thursday

Robert L. Bert Bliss 85 of Center Point and Walker communities died Sunday in Loma Linda California. A retired farmer and seed and twine salesman he was born September 27 1890 in Winston Missouri and married Iva May Harbey in 1914 and Esther Olberg in 1954. Surviving are his wife a daughter a son two stepdaughters seven grandchildren six step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren. Services Thursday 1:30 p.m. at Murdoch's Center Point with burial in Center Point cemetery. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
