Five Archdiocesan Servicemen Reported Dead
Five archdiocesan servicemen were reported killed or died of wounds in the last week. Cpl John James McLaughlin 21 was killed in action overseas after two years in service and leaves his mother Mrs Helen M McLaughlin and fiancee Miss Mary Katherine Kluck. Pfc Vincent Magnarini 26 killed in action on Okinawa April 28 after enlisting in 1941, survived by parents Albert and Mrs. Magnarini and three sisters. Seaman Second Class Albert F Messmer 20 died of rheumatic fever in Seattle naval hospital, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Messmer.

Catholic Hospital Planned for Miami Florida
Bishop Joseph P. Hurley of St. Augustine announced plans to purchase a site for a large Catholic hospital in Miami. The facility, Southeast Florida’s first Catholic hospital, will house 200 to 300 beds and be located on part of the Villa Vizcaya estate once developed by James Deering of the Deering Harvester company.

Dayton U Engineering Dean Matthias Haas Dies After Illness
Dr. Matthias E. Haas S M 56 dean of the University of Dayton College of Engineering died June 5 after a weeklong illness. Funeral services were held June 8 in the U D chapel with Fr. Walter Tredzin and other religious leaders officiating. Haas born December 25 1888 in Chicago joined the Society of Mary in 1905 and joined the U D faculty in 1912. He held degrees from the University of Dayton and University of Pittsburgh and served in roles including institutional representative for engineering and government sponsored science programs. He and his family are noted among the university community.
