Passes Away Pioneer John P Parker After Lingering Illness

John P Parker a county pioneer died at Walnut Ridge after a long illness. An autopsy by Coffin Sipe and Drs Bruner found cancer of the liver with as many as 134 gall stones in the gall bladder. Funeral at Walnut Ridge church. He was born 1823 in North Carolina and moved here in 1826. He married Miriam Hill in 1851 and had seven children. He served the community through schools and church, lived humbly, and sought to serve others until his death on 3rd month 7, 1896 at age 72.

The New Court House Contract Awarded

Rush county officials awarded the new court house contract to P H McCormack Co for 157143 dollars despite protests from J E Gibson of Logansport who claimed he offered the lowest bid. Work to demolish the old court house began with a large force set to remove offices, while Pythian Hall has been leased for offices and court room.

Ripley township Republicans name delegates in crowded convention

Ripley township Republicans met at Newson's Hall to select delegates for State, District, Judicial, Congressional, and County conventions. E N Hill led for State delegates but W G Allan won after Walker withdrew. Resolutions supported four year terms for county offices, anti gerrymander stance, and strong backing for Congressman Watson.

County Treasurer sells bonds to Cooks of Chicago for 172125

County Treasurer Thompson sold the court house bonds for 160000 with 5 percent interest. Bonds mature 10000 annually from 1901. Fourteen bids ranged. premium totals listed. Bonds sold to L and George D Cook Co at 172125. Later they failed to post 35000 forfeit, forcing Thompson to seek another buyer.

Earnest School closed Friday with exercises and a substantial dinner. Trustee Cox praised the teacher and noted Benes as outstanding in the township.
