The semi annual meeting of Rush County Sunday Schools convened at the Christian church with twelve districts represented except one. State Superintendent C D Meigs spoke, Elvira Parker's paper Better Teachers and How to Make Them praised, and music by a mixed chorus under Dr W J Porter. Local leaders MacNeill Tinsley Thomas Lucas from Rushville attended and participated.
At the Agricultural and Horticultural Society gathering next Saturday a discussion is planned on securing a succession of vegetables of the same kind. T. T. Newby will propose the topic. An exhibition of various pea and potato families in bloom, pod, or root form is suggested to aid selection, along with other vegetables showing their condition.
Chas Sibley of Mumford farm near New Harmony praised as the state’s top sheep barber. He sheared 94 in one day and 99 on another farm, earning eight cents per head and hoping to reach 100. An unknown man died by suicide Saturday after leaping from the new Big Four bridge in Jeffersonville.
A country merchant buys a dollar store table castor and gifts it to a preacher. The preacher returns it saying he is too poor to display the item and exchanges it for groceries worth $14. The merchant’s wife now must remove the castor before blessing the meal.
The County Board of Equalization will convene in the Auditor's Office on Monday June 21 1897 and continue a session twenty days for hearing complaints of taxpayers and equalizing the same. Mrs Louie Helbig and seven year old Charles and Harry Koeniger aged five of Greenfield left for Chicago Saturday night to take treatment at the Pasteur Institute for supposed hydro habia cases. The victims received severe injuries from a dog and it is thought the dog was mad at the time.
Ex Senator Archibald M. Kennedy died at his Rushville area home last week of fatty degeneration of the heart. Born August 25, 1818 in Guilford County North Carolina he moved to Indiana as a child, later settling in Rush County and engaging in bridge building. He helped organize the Republican party in Fayette County after leaving the Democrats over the slavery issue. Kennedy served in the Indiana General Assembly in 1870 and 1876, and was elected Senator in 1886 representing Hancock and Rush counties. He was a Baptist and remembered as a kindly influential citizen.
Werley Chance hosts a visitor in town as residents discuss cattle shipments by Trabue and Lyons. The trustee plans a dayen well being laid on the Mays school grounds. Mrs Albert Smelser of Indianapolis visited relatives in Mays. B B Benner reports a rat killing contest with 43 rats killed. Lester Henry and Fred Rhodes suffer hand injuries from scratches. Mrs Chas Werner of Mays stayed in Ohio over a week with a good time. Miss Sipe of Boone county visited locally and met several youths, inviting another visit.
The Henry County G A R will hold its annual reunion on July 3 in New Castle. Arrangements are under way to celebrate the Fourth on that same day by the citizens of the city.
