Carthage area notes busy with visits and illnesses

Knightstown residents, including Hudelson and Jen Hudelson, frequent Fayette and Chicago trips. Townsfolk report feeble Elizabeth Patterson and severe rheumatism for Bertha Bishop. Convalescence for Thomas Venness, danger for Robert White, and scarlet fever affecting others. Community events include Arbor Day plans, Decoration Day prep, and rail-side notices.

Hinchman Tobacco Barn Destroyed in Farm Fire

Robert N. Hinchman's tobacco barn on his Union township farm burned Monday night. A nearly new structure housed 12,000 pounds of tobacco four cultivators a mower and other implements and the fire spread to a hog house and feed house. Loss around 1200 with 100 on barn and 450 on tobacco covered by insurance.

Street Crossings Opened Over Big Four Tracks

Marshal Hill and his men opened the Big Four track crossings to traffic with no opposition from the railroad company. Monday afternoon Attorney Cowgill arrived and attended Squire Benjamin's court where the decision in Town vs Big Four Railways was delivered with leave to appeal.

A Little Gas Sparks Praise and Cautions from a Guest

A letter from Charlottesville Indiana praises the towns of Carthage and Charlottesville for their scenery and culture while urging gas conservation. The writer notes gas leaks between Charlottesville and Elizabeth City Wilkison where gas escapes and bubbles water, calling wasteful burning in stores and homes unnecessary. She commends local school, library, churches and civic spirit, urging prudent use of natural gas.

Parmerton Notes on Harvest Prospects and Social Visits

Parmerton reports George Price slowly improving and wheat looking well promising a good harvest. Sunday visits include Milton Herkless and wife at J. H. Siler's and Lewis Reddick and family at J. F. Leisure's. J. H. Hill and wife attended Blue River church, Mrs Robert Manning visited daughter Ed Bitner, and J. Fleener and family of near Henderson attended Carthage church. Nora Stump from Carthage visited cousin Oma Willis. George Dillman and wife traveled to Hancock county to visit daughter Mrs John Gray.
