Manilla outran Milroy 33 to 22 on the winner's course with Herbert of Milroy first in 10 36. Manilla runners took the next four places in a decisive clash Tuesday.
James G. Brooks age 17 of Carthage and Jo Ann Eaks age 19 of Greenfield collided Sunday at 1 45 p m one and a half miles south of Carthage on Arlington road. Brooks said a tire blew out but later blamed loss of control on a wavy road surface. Damages were recorded at 150 for Brooks and 200 for Eaks. No injuries reported.
Mr and Mrs Ronald Somers of Richland Michigan welcomed a daughter born Tuesday September 23 The child is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs William Ewing of Whiteland and the great granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Guy Ewing of Carthage.
Mr and Mrs John Pierce of Greenfield and brothers Dave and Dan Hunt of Carthage enjoyed the Saturday Cincinnati Reds versus St Louis Cardinals double header.
Mrs. Forrest Moore attended a State Board meeting of the Garden Club of Indiana at Spring Mill Park. The annual Conservation Conference followed on Wednesday and Thursday also at Spring Mill Park with 47 clubs represented and 95 women in attendance. attendees included Mrs. Loyal Hunt Mrs. Thomas Bush and Mrs. Albert Ray.
Mrs. Noah Brooks, Mrs. Raymond Kennedy and Mrs. Rachel King attended Eastern Star Friends night at Liberty as guest Electa. Others, including Mrs. Odell Pitts, attended Inspection of the Eastern Star in Richmond on Saturday evening.
Mr and Mrs Harold Dixon and their son Jerry attended the baseball game in Cincinnati on Sunday between the Reds and an opponent, enjoying the local sport scene and family outing.
Mrs. Russell Parish spent two weeks in Banning California with her son and family Mr and Mrs Bill Parish and their daughter. She traveled to California by bus and returned to Indiana by car via the southern route. Mrs Parish and her daughter will visit her mother in North Vernon while in Indiana.
Bar and Mrs George B McNabb Jr and their two children left last Wednesday for Fairbanks Alaska after spending six weeks here visiting relatives.
The Ripley Two Farm Bureau held a Monday evening session at the Community Center with Chairman Kenneth Land presiding. Members voted to move the 4H entertaining date to Monday October 19 at the same center. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Roy Stanley.
Last Sunday at 2 p.m. the Community Center basement hosted a tea for Fall Festival Queen candidates plus their mothers sponsors and guests. Roy Small opening remarks welcomed all followed by introductions of organizers and judges and a three minute interview of each candidate counted toward contest points.
Mr and Mrs Leon Whitfield hosted a Sunday birthday dinner for Mrs Velma Todd of Carthage. Guests included Mrs Sharon Roberts and son Todd, Mr and Mrs David DeWitt Jr and family, Mr and Mrs Robert Dean and family, Mr and Mrs Jerry West of Knightstown, Mr and Mrs Robert Todd of Anderson, and Mrs Lowell Brooks and family.
The Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority met at the Community Center on the third floor Tuesday night with Mrs. Homer Hensler and Mrs. Ross Tweedy as hostesses. A candlelight initiation honored Mrs. Edward J. McGarry. The group voted to donate 50 dollars to the Henry Henley Library in Carthage. Plans were made for the Fall Festival Dance. Prizes were awarded during bridge and canasta.
The Christian Womens Fellowship will hold a meeting at the Christian Church on Thursday October 1 at 2 p m.
Patricia Tipton underwent surgery Monday at Methodist Hospital and is in room B-407. Fred Flick, Carthage rural mail carrier, convalesces on the first floor south with a fractured vertebra from a ladder fall. Mattie Geise has been released from Rush Memorial Hospital and is convalescing at the Geise home. The McManuses are improving at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs A W Winfield is convalescing at home after release from Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs Luther Hall was released Monday from Rush Memorial Hospital.
The 1964 Fall Festival parade features American Legion Color Guard Carthage High School Band and 1963 Fall Festival Queen Miss Patty McCorkle plus local groups such as Ripley Township Coon Hunters Float Boy Scout Troop and various floats. The parade starts at 2:00 pm at Main Street and continues to Henley Street without a turn back option. Units may turn east or west on Henley Street and proceed as desired. Officials hope for many more entries and broad participation.
The family of Mrs. Flora Hunt will host an open house honoring her 89th birthday on Friday October 2 at her home west of Carthage. It will run in the afternoon and evening and friends are invited with no gifts requested.
Rush County Coaches and Principals Association set the county baseball tournament schedule with Carthage drawing the bye. Opening games are September 29 at Milroy Arlington Mays New Salem Manilla Morton. Semi finals October 2 and final October 6 at the same sites.

On September 21, 1964 at 3 30 in the Home Ec room the Ripley Needletwisters held a 4H meeting with 19 members present. Jenny Boff presided as president. Sylvia Skillman and Darlene Barry were elected Junior and Senior queens respectively. Kathy Smith and Linda Copple joined the car committee. Wanda Henderson reported.
Mrs Jessie McGeorge of Carthage spent Thursday to Sunday at the home of Mrs Jesse L Haynes in Cleveland Ohio due to Mr Haynes death. She attended Mr Haynes funeral on Saturday. Mr Haynes was a brother in law to the late James McGeorge.
Mrs. Robert Walker, Mrs. Roy Stanley, Mrs. Fletcher Edwards, Mrs. Leonard Bucy and Mrs. Raymond Kennedy and Kelly Land attended a district meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Service at Brookville all day last Friday.
Arlington defeated Carthage 6 to 3 Tuesday night at home. Wildcat pitchers Wooten and Beckner limited the Raiders to five hits while Porter homered and Zimmerman doubled for Carthage. Arlington led 2 0 0 0 3 0 0 the inning scoring sequence shows early and late runs.
Sports brief shows Morton 20 Mays 4 and New Salem 12 Manilla 2 with unnamed outcomes and no further details.
Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Hunt over the weekend included her brother and wife Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Masters of Attica New York and Mrs. O N Masters of New Castle. The party visited relatives in Louisville and Lexington Kentucky.
Mrs Ralph Moore visited her sister Mrs Jerry Shaw at Connerville on Sunday.
Bonita Gatewood daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Gatewood was crowned Miss Fall Festival Queen for 1964 at the Queen Contest and Pageant held at the Community Center. The event featured Master of Ceremonies Wayne Logan of Rushville, judges, and sponsors including Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority and Knightstown Greenhouse.
J A VanDerVliet, helicopter pilot for Public Service Company of Indiana, logs his 10 000th accident free hour. He receives a Roddy Kilowatt trophy from VP Walter J Matthews as the company notes 33 000 miles of annual air patrol and 5 400 miles of transmission lines in a 69 county area.
The Southeast District Garden Club convened Wednesday at Greensburg Baptist Church with 130 attendees and 24 clubs represented from the 27 in the district. State President Mrs. Fred Ault spoke on the National Convention. Carthage Club placed 9th in the district. Local attendees included Mrs. Forrest Moore among others.
Donald Moore a 41 year old of Carthage was arrested Sunday at Third and Main Streets on a public intoxication charge. He received the minimum fine in Rushville Justice of the Peace court.
The Rush County 4H and FFA annual Land Judging Contest drew 90 participants on September 19 at a farm north of U.S. Highway 40. Steve Hahn led with 178 points, followed by Jack Osborne and Mike Owens, all from Rushville Township. Top five teams included Rushville entries dominating the standings and advancing to the district contest in Blackford County on October 3.
A Sunday dinner at Sullivans Restaurant honored Mr. and Mrs. John Willoughby of Long Beach California. Guests included Mrs. Gouldie Kyser Sharlee Kyser Carthage Hattie Innis Milroy A J Carr Ethel Renegar Knightstown G H Jones Olive Poston New Castle A C Hiatt Claribel Fisher Indianapolis. A social afternoon followed at the home of A J Carr.
