On the Beat notes a Fall Festival meeting tonight Friday Sept 18 at 8 p.m. in the Community Center with all chairmen and board members urged to attend. Carthage Art Colony displays run Sept 26 at the Community Center with a $1 fee to hang pictures.
Mrs Florence Parker of West Chester Pa reports her son John and his family have returned from a six weeks trip to Europe this summer. He was part of a student group that visited 13 countries. Mrs John Parker is a teacher in the students’ school taking the trip.
Mr and Mrs Mike Watkins and their sons relocate from Greenfield to Bloomington to Redbud Hill Apartment 705 where Mr Watkins will be a senior majoring in accounting They previously lived in Carthage
A boy was born Wednesday at Rush Memorial Hospital to Mr and Mrs Bengie Logan of Carthage.
Mrs. Dave DeWitt suffered a broken right arm after stepping on spilled grapes in a Rushville grocery last week. She fell when the floor was wet, prompting treatment at a local clinic.
Talent show tickets are available now at Windsors with reserved seats priced at 0.50 and 0.75 dollars. The sale promotes early purchase for attendees and audience seating options.
The Carthage Parents Teachers Organization held a cooperative supper Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Community Center for teachers. President Thomas Shields led the meeting with secretary Mrs. Lyle Plank reporting. Principal Byron Smith introduced the teachers and Trustee Robert McKain discussed the school consolidation pending for Carthage.
The Better Business Association of Carthage met at the J and E Cafe Tuesday at 1 p.m. Mrs. Richard Harrold, president, led the session with secretary and treasurer reports. Members voted to create a Fall Festival float, naming Mrs. Jennie Chance float chairman.
Larry E. Fenner has accepted a position as a medical and x ray technician for his internship at Coshocton County General Hospital in Coshocton Ohio.
Mr and Mrs Larry Morris and daughter Jeri Jan move from Wabash Indiana to Long Island New York this month. Larry becomes head basketball coach and assistant baseball coach. Morris family are former local teachers now at Vevay.
Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Moore returned home on Labor Day from a two week vacation. The first week they visited points of interest in Florida and the second week stayed with their son Major F. N. Moore and family at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia.
Mrs Mary Alice Rogers 43 of New Castle died Sept 17 in Henry County Hospital after ten days as patient. She worked nine years at the State Employment Office. Survived by husband Leonard two sisters Laura Sandefur Violet Kline Irene Kline three brothers Steve Maple Charles Maple Clair Jr Ames Funeral Saturday at 3 30 p m at Macer Funeral Home New Castle.
Greenfield resident James W. Mosier begins a science course at Indiana Central College two nights weekly. Kellis Veach enters Indiana University for a senior year in Business Administration. Steve Marshall joins Purdue University as a science freshman escorted by his parents. Pam Hunt starts junior year at Butler University pursuing Dance. Judy Kennedy begins junior year at Indiana University Medical Center in Occupational Therapy. Bob Harrold pursues a Purdue Doctorate in Research in his seventh year. David Ruby enters senior year at Indiana University in Business. James Ellis Jr. begins Butler University junior year majoring in Music. Amy Addison enters Purdue senior year in Home Economics with sister Reta Addison as a Purdue sophomore. Linda Harrold starts Purdue as a sophomore in Home Economics. Marvin Heim leaves Labor Day for North Manchester College to study Chemistry. Jeannine Terhune departs for Taylor University as a junior majoring in Music. Mike Watkins enters Indiana University for his senior year in Accounting. Gary Siler begins senior year at Tri-State College in Motor Transportation and Business Administration. Jim Overman, son of Jack and Mrs. Overman, works on a Rutgers University Master’s degree. Jim Terhune of Bloomington pursues a doctorate at Indiana University and works there. he is the son of Albert and Mrs. Terhune.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Oliver of Greenfield announce the birth of a 6 lb 12 oz son on Tuesday September 8 1964 at the Hancock Co Hospital. Mrs Joan Whitfield is the former Miss Whitfield and the child’s grandparents are Mrs Beth Whitfield of Carthage and Mr and Mrs Ed Oliver of Maxwell formerly of Carthage.

Mrs. Clarence Dulake had surgery at Hanover Co hospital in Greenfield. Mr. and Mrs. Fred McManus convalesce at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Oran Henley remains at her Carthage home. Mrs. Mary Gorman returns home from Henry County Hospital. Gloria Taylor convalesces at Community Hospital in Anderson after a broken arm. An error misidentified her previous hospital. Mrs. Luther Hall had major surgery at Rush Memorial and is improving. Mrs. Arthur Winfield entered Rush Memorial for treatment and observation.
Rush County residents weigh options for Carthage School reorganization after three votes leave seven townships in the mix. Robert E. McKain, trustee, urges Ripley Township residents to express their views on a one unit plan and board representation.
The Carthage American Legion Auxiliary held its September meeting at the Community Center with District President Dorothy Tudor presiding. Installation of officers for the coming year followed, and plans were set for Fall Festival including a Service Sales booth and Cake Walk.
Mr and Mrs Homer Bowers relocated last Thursday to a residence in Charlottesville close to the local school.
Church social at the Methodist Church drew about 75 attendees Sunday evening at 6 oclock. The outside cooked chicken and a cooperative supper were served in the annex area.
Mrs. Maxine Riggs and several Knightstown families gathered Sunday at Memorial Park New Castle for the Coon reunion. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Russell Siler and daughter Karen Mr and Mrs Carl Carson Sr and Mrs Kenneth Gabbard and son.
The 1964 Fall Festival Queen Contest begins Sunday September 20 with an afternoon tea for contestants their mothers and sponsors. Judges will interview each contestant for three minutes. The finale is Sunday September 23 with Miss Fall Festival 1964 crowned by 1963 holder Miss Patty McCorkle. Tickets are on sale at Carthage Radio and Appliance Shop. Reserved $1.00 general 75 cents.
The Fall Festival Committee mailed donor letters for the next festival and invites new cash contributions. Donations may be made by check to Fall Festival Committee or as cash to Harold Dixon, the committee treasurer.
George J. Carwein 79 died suddenly at home in Arlington. A farmer and Locust Grove Farm owner he bred Spotted Poland China hogs born January 15 1885 in Shelby County son of Daniel and Lillian Mann Carwein married Blanche Downey August 4 1909. Survivors include wife two daughters Lois Beckner and Leatha Sterrett a son Carl D Carwein 12 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren and a predeceased Cedric. Funeral at Wyatt Moore Memorial 2 p.m. Friday with Rev R C Buck, burial Arlington East Hill Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier and Mr and Mrs Wilbur McCorkle spent two weeks away. They toured New York City and the World’s Fair visiting RCA Rockefeller Center NBC Funny Girl the Unsinkable Molly Brown and the Village Barn. They attended a Mets Dodgers game at Shea Stadium and enjoyed a Silver Lake stay in northern Indiana with pleasant weather and good accommodations.
Carthage improved to 3 0 in league play with a 14 2 victory over Mays. Porter and La fuse combined for the win while Mays’ pitchers Smith and Cloud struggled as Carthage erupted for ten runs in the first two innings and out hit the visitors 11 to 5.
The Indiana Historical Society announces a Genealogical Workshop in Aurora Indiana on Saturday October 10 1964. The program runs 10 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm at the Aurora Public Library. Reservations are 150 per person to Miss Dorothy Riker Indianapolis.
George Jackson sustained severe injuries to two fingers on his right hand around noon Monday. He received hospital treatment at an Indianapolis hospital and was placed in a cast after being freed from the corn picker. He had first been treated at Rushville Hospital.
A home on 3rd Street is identified as owned by Joseph Porter in the local property notice. The brief item notes ownership and street location without additional legal actions or dates.
Plans are moving for the 19th Carthage Fall Festival to run September 23 to 26 in 1964. Roy Small and Gary Stewart chair the event with rides, art displays, a veterans craft booth, a plant sale, and a queen pageant. Activities include a Smorgasbord, euchre, talent show, fish fry, children’s contests, a parade, cake walk, and a Saturday dance, with proceeds supporting the community center.
The Carthage Lions Club held its first meeting of the year at the Lions Den with 20 members and 4 guests including District Governor Carter Everage of Versailles and Cabinet Secretary Stanley Underwood. New officers were introduced as plans were made for Fall Festival activities, a Fish Fry, a festival parade float, and walnut collection projects. Attendance awards were presented to seven members for 1 to 8 years of perfect attendance. Everage praised Lions International and the club’s community service.
New officers of the Rush County Democratic Women's Club were elected at a meeting in Democratic headquarters in Rushville. Elected were Mrs. Dorothy Elliott president, Mrs. Gladys Butler vice president, Mrs. Iris Smith secretary, and Mrs. Barbara Fey treasurer. The retiring president presided as plans were completed for a reception for Mrs. Vance Hartke at the Durbin Hotel this Thursday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ruby of Carthage return from a two week Florida vacation with their daughter Mrs. Max Ellis and Mr. Ellis of Knightstown.
Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Sipes and Mr. and Mrs. Lindley Taylor returned to Carthage Saturday from a two week Florida vacation. They weathered Hurricane Dora while traveling. The group visited Jacksonville Mt. Dora and Ed wards in Mt. Dora and toured the city and hurricane damage.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Fenner visited with David Kuebler of Columbus on Sunday, sharing a social call and local chatter during the weekend gathering.
