Fire swept a large barn north of Manilla owned by John Russell shortly after 2 p.m. Friday. Eight thousand bales of hay and 600 bushels of oats were burned along with baled straw stock racks and stored lumber. Cause under investigation though hay combustion is suspected.
Mrs. Russell Shutt of Carthage and Mrs. Roy Miller with children of Brownsburg along with Mrs. Benny Kelley and son of Indianapolis are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beise and daughter in Jacksonville, Florida. Mrs. Beise is the former Mary Ann Shutt of Carthage.
Mrs. Celia Alexander remains convalescent at home with condition about the same. James Sparks of Carthage R A 1 also remains about the same at the New Castle Clinic.
A series of birth notices from Hancock Memorial Greenfield Rushville and Dunn Memorial Hospitals details newborns to families in Carthage Lewisville Knightstown Greenfield Bedford and Mays with weights ranging from 6 lb 10 oz to 7 lb 5 1 2 oz and names such as Dora Sue Lyle Allen Karen Annette Carolyn Lorraine and Roger Wayne.
The Christian Womens Fellowship held its September meeting last Thursday at the church with 21 members present. President Ruth Jackson presided. devotions were by Dinnie Moore and Opal Flick led a lesson. A Festival Smorgasbord was discussed and a school sack lunch was served by Eva Wagoner, Bessie Reddick, Laura Reddick, Betty Sullivan, and Gladys Geise.
David Magee of Chattanooga Tennessee and formerly of Carthage has been promoted to plant superintendent of the Container Corporation box plant in Chattanooga. Mr and Mrs Magee and their children reside in Chattanooga.
A special program marks Rally Day on Sunday September 27 with a goal of at least 200 attendees. The church will follow fast time and invites community members not already at another church to join.
The Reverend Paul Mayfield of Carthage underwent emergency major surgery Saturday night at Henry County Hospital. He is in room 123.
Mrs Laura Scott of Carthage Edith Bean and Orphie Maple of Rushville and Daisy Cook of New Salem return home Friday from a three week vacation to California Mrs Scott visited sister Mary Coyner in Los Angeles They traveled to California by the northern route and came home on the southern route.
Carthage High School welcomes Mr Jerry Montgomery an agricul ture and biology teacher from Purdue University class of 1957 now in his third year. The community prepares a Fall Festival with queen floats parade and talent show to raise funds for the Community Center. Students report music rehearsals and class activity across grade school updates.
In a meeting of the advisory board principal and trustees on August 15 the decision was made to shift to central standard time in accordance with law starting Monday September 28.
A casual Mt Idy letter reports rumors about Bryan Ogg marrying Widow Darby for her$80,000 inheritance and notes Gertrude Perkins returns from Europe with banana jokes. It mentions Elsia Crack coming into money after her uncle’s stroke, and closes with a light family scene of a father kissing a bride and a black eye.
Carthage finished last in a four team cross country meet at Morristown with Morristown first Yorktown second Hauser third and Carthage fourth. Tom Roberts led Carthage with 11 19 over 2 5 miles while Morristown win time stood at 10 05. In baseball Milroy defeated Carthage 8 3 at Milroy diamond as Randy McClurg and others tallied one hit apiece for Carthage while Milroy piled eight and Owens homered and others doubled or tripled.
Carthage triumphed 13 to 4 over Knightstown in a non league game as they erupted for five runs in the fourth inning after a 1 1 tie. Doughty pitched all nine innings allowing five hits with seven strikeouts and six walks while contributing a key late homer. Knightstown used three pitchers and committed four unearned runs.
The Juniors of East Christian Church met last Thursday at 6 30 p m with twenty in attendance. Seventeen members and three teachers were present. Reporter Vernon L Little.
Chi Rho met on September 21 1959 with 16 members and 2 guests. Betty Harris led flag salute and songs. Phillip Manuel gave Bible pledge. Roy Blessinger closed with prayer. Refreshments were served by Tommy Manuel and Charlie Henderson.
Corporal Curtis A. Lewman 30, wife Virginia of Carthage, assigned to Headquarters Company 32nd Infantry in the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. Entered the Army in 1949 arriving in the Far East last July. Son of Mr and Mrs Samuel H Lewman Charlottesville attended Charlottesville High School. Previously employed by Pennsylvania Railroad Greenfield before enlisting.
Mrs. Russell Parish provides the mailing address of her son Private Billy Gene Parish with service number 16634067 in Bat D, 3rd B.T.A.T.C., Ft Sill Oklahoma.
Army Pfc. Jerry D. Wrightsman son of Mr and Mrs Leonard C Wrightsman of Carthage Indiana took part in platoon and company tests during a long 4th Armored Division field training exercise in Grafenwohr Germany. The 19 year old joined in December 1958 and trained at Fort Hood before arriving in Europe last April. He is a 1958 Carthage High School graduate and worked at Jims Super Service Station Knightstown before enlistment.
The Methodist Youth Fellowship held its regular meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. The treasurer reported and minutes were approved. Old business noted tickets for Billy Graham on October 9 were received. Mrs. Lynch led Scripture and group discussion. Jeannine Terhune directed singing with Lynn Kennedy on new songs. Mr. Winters was guest speaker. meeting closed with MYF benediction by Sue Moser. refreshments served by Lou Ella Magee, Beth Roberts.
The 1959 Carthage Fall Festival begins Thursday October 1 at 3 p.m. at the Tweedy Memorial Center with a flower show and sale. Events span three days including a smorgasbord, euchre party, Lions Club food stand, band concert, and a talent show, supporting the Tweedy Memorial building since 1946.
Howard E. Windsor leads the 1959 Fall Festival appeal, citing past gifts that funded dining room redecorations, new tables, an electric drinking fountain, draperies, updated restrooms, and a larger entrance. This year aims to remodel the stage and fund a new heating system. Donations payable to Carthage Community Center.
Samuel L. Newsom, 90, a retired Carthage dry goods merchant, died at 7 30 p.m. last Thursday night at Madison State Hospital after five years as a patient with arteriosclerosis. He was born February 15 1869 in Carthage the son of Allen W. and Ann White Newsom. He partnered with his father in business, later owned it, and retired in 1919 at age fifty. He married Annie Henley in 1893 who survives. Survivors include daughter Mrs Henry B. Henley of Terre Haute Indiana three grandchildren five great grandchildren two step brothers Floyd Newsom of Terre Haute and Howard Newsom of Chicago two sisters Cora Newsom McCarty and Winona Newsom preceded him in death. A birthright member of Carthage Friends Church and Rush Lodge No 580 F A M he was active in civic affairs. The couple traveled widely after retirement visiting Texas California Florida and the Carolinas. Funeral services were Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hampton Mortuary Carthage with Rev Edgar White and Rev Herman Parker. burial in Riverside Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Mrs. Babs Osborn of Carthage leases the former King's Restaurant on East Mill Street and renames it The Mill Inn. It will be open six days a week from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a local staff handling cooks and waitresses. lunches and short orders will be served as before.

Post office guidance remains pending with Indianapolis. officials urge residents to set clocks to fit their conditions until April when uniform time returns.
Max Edward Whitfield Jr., infant son of Mr and Mrs Max Whitfield Sr, died Friday night at the family home in Carthage after months of ill health. He was two months and 12 days old. Survived by parents two sisters Mel anie Sue Peggy Jean two brothers Reginald Vickie Joe maternal grandparents Donald Haler Knights town paternal grandmother Mrs Charles W Whitfield Carthage.
