Mr. C. H. Nixon of Carthage attended the GOP Fund Raising banquet at the Indiana State Fair Coliseum last Saturday. He was introduced to Vice President Richard Nixon, a cousin, and also met Indiana Governor George Craig during the event.
John Jackson returns from Great Lakes Training Station to visit his mother Mrs Dana Gulley and family. Marvin Ray, son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Ray, leaves for U S Navy service in San Diego California on Thursday morning September 22. Jack Jackson, son of Mr and Mrs Trees Jackson, arrives home Tuesday morning for a three week furlough from San Diego California.
Mrs. Gouldie Kyser, a night operator at the local telephone office, has resigned. She suffered an accident in May and has served as an operator for 14 years.
A Monday call to the Carthage Volunteer Fire Department halted a grass fire threatening a barn on Donald Stoten’s farm. No damage occurred and firefighters extinguished the blaze quickly.
Mrs Ina Rhodes underwent surgery on Tuesday morning at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She is improving slowly. Her room number is B 228.
Mr and Mrs Noah Leisure were summoned to Greenfield by the sudden death of Lawrence Weber from a heart attack Saturday night around 10. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 at Pasco Funeral Home, with burial in Greenfield cemetery.
The smorgasbord dinner at East Street Christian church Saturday drew a large crowd and cleared about 270 dollars.
Rev Eugene C Sommer pastor of the Friends church continues seminary studies at the School of Religion Butler University in Indianapolis Indiana continuing his religious education efforts while serving his congregation.
The Cub Scouts invite all boys aged 8 to 11 and their parents to attend a meeting at the Community Center next Tuesday at 7 30 p m. All attendees are asked to be present for the session.
Carthage High School extended its undefeated run in Rush County League by beating Milroy 12-7 and New Salem 14-3. The team has four wins as they prepare for Friday's game with Mays and the upcoming annual tournament opening Tuesday. Other scores include Manilla 4 Mays 3 Arlington 17 New Salem 6 and Mays 6 Milroy 5.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Newby of St Louis Missouri attended the General Assembly of Pioneers of America in Washington at the Shoreham Hotel during a four day session. They were overnight guests of Mrs Nelle Newby on Tuesday on their way home.
The Fletcher Methodist, Friends and Christian churches co sponsor an event at the Community Center next Thursday night. Tickets on sale with adults 1.25 dollars and children 0.75 and 0.50 dollars.
Effective October 4 1955 the state driver examiner will be at the local Auto Branch Tuesday morning from 8 to 11 am instead of the Wednesday afternoon slot. Please note the change. Mrs Anice Bly branch mgr.
Gena Board trimmed two levy lines at its annual session on Monday. Welfare levy reduced by one cent and Ripley Township poor relief cut by one cent, leaving overall rates higher for most units. State Tax Board reviews in September may drive further cuts.
Carthage School will shift to standard time this winter with a half hour delay. Beginning Monday October 3 classes will start at 8 46 instead of 8 10 and dismissal will move from 3 25 to 3 55.
Rush County teachers are urged to attend a State Teachers Association series of meetings about the November referendum on approving or disapproving the proposed social security and Supplemental Retirement plan. Meetings run 7:30 p m host city time with dates in Richmond New Castle Muncie Anderson and host rooms listed.
The 1955 56 Junior class reports busy efforts including officer elections James Neal president Gary McClurg vice president Phyllis Cline treasurer, choosing Phyllis Cline as Fall Festival Queen candidate, candy store and magazine sales, class rings order set for Thanksgiving, and fundraising for a class trip. Also notes humor column and social updates on juniors and activities.
On Friday September 30 1955 Rush Memorial Hospital will administer a second Salk vaccine only to second and third grade pupils who had their first shot last April. The March of Dimes provides the vaccine and Rush County physicians volunteer. A written parent or guardian request is required. Schedule lists times for area schools in DST with multiple locations and times.
About 20 members met Wednesday at the Community Center where pictures were shown and plans made for the Fall Festival. October meeting will be a Fitch in and guest night with refreshments by Mrs. Donald Ruby and Mrs. James Ellis.
Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Louder of Greenfield called on Mrs. Gertrude Jessup Friday afternoon. The Misses Elsie and Ada Chappell were in Indianapolis Saturday.
Twelve Rush County 4-H members competed at the Rush County courthouse. David Stanley won the potato sweepstakes with a tray of thirty potatoes and John Tice won the tomato sweepstakes. Other potato placers included Joe Booth James Peck Jimmy Emmons Ray L Ball and Howard Wilkinson. Tomato placers included Joe Booth Junior Tumilty John K Overman James Peck and Delmar Halgarth. Tomato entries were a ham per of tomatoes and a plate of five. members also submitted a completed record book.
Preparations advance for the 1955 Carthage Festival with a Thursday smorgasbord at the Community Center and a Friday talent show titled Toast of the Town. Tickets range from 50c to $1.25 with activities including game contests, a parade, a cake walk, and a Saturday dance featuring The Rhythmaires. Proceeds benefit the Community Center.
Donald Rhodes and Cecil Criswell admitted at the county jail on Sunday that they broke into Tubby's Pool Room in Carthage early Saturday. They confessed to Sheriff Robert May and said they took $30 in rolled nickels. Rhodes, an AWOL Marine, will be turned over to marine police. both received suspended 1 to 10 year sentences after pleading guilty to grand larceny in Bush Circuit Court.
The Ripley Home Makers met in the Community Center with co-hostesses Mrs. Jessie McGeorge Mrs. Eva Wagner and Mrs. Evelyn Neal. President Maude Shutt opened with the flag salute and creed while devotionals were led by Mrs. Wagner and Lenore Foster delivered the aging plans lesson.
The Ripley Conservation Club hosted a tractor pulling event last Sunday at Henry Jessup's farm with a fair turnout. Winners across weight classes included Bob Morgan, Sheila Noah Jr, Bill Gatewood, Bob Rushton, Truman Sawyer, and others, with trophies awarded. The organizing officers salute everyone who helped run the contest.

The Tenth District American Legion Auxiliary will host a Parliamentary School of Instruction on September 29 at 8 p m at the Legion Home in Shelbyville. Unit officers and members are urged to attend for panel discussion on meeting procedure parliamentary basics flag etiquette and a Q A session with possible program changes. Mr. and Mrs. William Castner and son Stephen of Indianapolis were weekend guests of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Flick.
Lee J. Baker a former Carthage resident died Sunday morning at his son Howard’s home in Arlington. Born July 4 1885 in Carthage he was the son of James and his wife. He married Anna Tarbet of Carthage who preceded him in death. Survivors include three sons Howard Arthur and Robert two daughters Ruth Schaper and Mary Alice Wheatley two sisters Wilbur Hagen and Alice Brewer and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Mt Gilead at 10 am Wednesday with burial in Walnut Ridge cemetery near Carthage.
Mrs Lena Newsom visited her daughter Mrs R B Stanley near Mays this week. Mr and Mrs Ralph Truitt visited Mr and Mrs David Magee in Bloomington Sunday. Miss Sue Ann Truitt returned to Indiana University. Mrs Nelle Undenhower of Indianapolis stayed with Mrs Lora Reedy over the weekend. Everett Hawkins hosted a Sunday dinner with guests including Mr and Mrs Howard Binford their daughter Betty and Ted Hodson of Greensburg and Mrs Anna Anderson. the occasion marked Mrs Binford's birthday anniversary.
