Two hampers of tomatoes were given to the men at the Veterans Hospital on Cold Springs Road Indianapolis last Friday by John Combs and Clyde Dove of the Jones Canning Co. The recipients were very appreciative of the produce.
Indiana Stream Pollution Control Board schedules hearings on alleged discharges. Mount Vernon faces charges of sewage entering the Ohio River via Mill Creek and McFadden Ditch, with a proposed $710,000 bond for a new sewer system and primary treatment plant. Container Corp. of America in Carthage to be heard Oct. 11 over strawboard waste polluting Blue River.
An unusually large livestock barn on the C. M. Crockett farm along the Rush Henry county line between Raleigh and Lewisville was destroyed by fire about 2 pm Sunday. A huge quantity of hay in the packed mow burned with the barn. no stock was in the building and all machinery was saved. A few hand tools were destroyed. Owner Mr Crackett resides in Richmond. Leroy May is farm manager.
Roy Campbell of Carthage son of Mrs Hattie Campbell returned home last Thursday from Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis. He is slowly improving. His birthday falls on Friday September 16.
Mr and Mrs Al Stapp and their young daughter moved into their new residence Saturday located to the east of Carthage.
Russell Apple, injured weeks ago in an auto accident, left Methodist hospital in Indianapolis Saturday and returned home near Mays. He is doing nicely.
Mr and Mrs Charles Whitfield attended the Indiana Rural Carriers meeting at the Lincoln Hotel in Indianapolis Saturday night and Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Omar Heim and family along with Dean Addison and Mrs. Leonard Wrightsman and children spent the weekend at Lake Freeman enjoying fishing and swimming.
The Wesleyan Methodist youth group held a wiener roast at New Castle Memorial Park Friday evening. Officers were elected: Ronnie Magge president, Paul Turner vice president, Sally Aker secretary, Iris Criswell treasurer. Twenty one attended and all enjoyed the event.
Carthage School announces kindergarten starts Monday October 3. Children who are five on or before that date may attend, and mothers should accompany on the first day. A birth certificate must be shown.
Mrs. Henry G. Stager, Grand President of Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority, attended the Grand Council meeting at the Lincoln Hotel in Indianapolis. She presided over the session on Saturday.
Rev and Mrs Eugene C Sommer attended sessions of the annual meeting of the Eastern Indiana Association of Congregational Christian Churches in Portland this week.
Betty Pearl Harris nine year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard Harris sustained a serious eye injury while at school. She received medical treatment at an Indianapolis hospital.
Sunshine Circle hosts a smorgasbord dinner at Carthage Christian Church on Saturday September 17. Serving times are 5 to 7 p m. Price is 1 25 for adults and 75 cents for children.
The Carthage American Legion Auxiliary held its September 12 meeting at Mrs. Rachel King’s home to install the 1955 56 officers led by district president Mrs Mildred Hermansdorfer. New officers include Rachel King president Vera McNabb first vice president Hilda Sandefur secretary Bertha Beck treasurer Dora Ray chaplain Ann Gardner historian Janice Pitts sergeant at arms.
Mrs. Kenneth Sherwood of Johnson City New York Mrs Tena Keller and Mrs Lillie Whitton of Hamilton Ohio were last week visitors of Mr and Mrs John Brooks and family They also visited Mr and Mrs Raymond Kennedy and family
Mr and Mrs George Moore and Mr and Mrs Forrest Moore hosted a Wednesday family dinner honoring Mr and Mrs Elvet Moore of New Jersey. Other attendees included Mrs Robert Norris two Terre Haute children and several Moore relatives. The event featured warm hosting and family greetings.
A Saturday afternoon blaze of unknown origin damaged a garage wood-house smoke house pump-house milk-house and hen house at the home of Mr and Mrs James Ter hune while they attended a funeral. Carthage Volunteer Fire Dept. extinguished the fire and saved the house and other structures.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Mrs. Elizabeth James 75 at the Moffitt Schweizer Funeral Home in Knightstown with Rev. Earl Sharp officiating. She died Wednesday evening in Rush Memorial hospital. Survivors include her husband Raymond two grandchildren and a cousin Mrs. Joanna Gibson of Carthage.
The Carthage Citizen invites all local children to a free portrait event with Waltz Studios of Des Moines on Saturday October 1 from 9 am to 6 pm at the Citizen Office. Parents need not subscribe or buy prints, and extra prints can be arranged with the studio.
Mr and Mrs Noah Brooks and daughter attended the Brumfiel reunion Sunday at Lewisville. Roy Billman of Chicago and Mr and Mrs Paul Billman of Indianapolis were Sunday guests of their sister Mrs Jesse Kizer and Mr Kizer. Sunday evening dinner guests in the home of Mrs Harold Ruby included Mrs Mabel Paul Mrs Lenna Frazee Bill Duncan Mrs Virginia Duncan Miss Bessie Barnes all of Anderson Miss Judy Collins of Knightstown and Pete Ballard of Carthage.
Carthage Lions Club resumed regular meetings last Monday with District Governor John Hardin of the Ben Davis club as guest. He shared photos from the national convention in Atlantic City this summer and members discussed Festival plans and appointed committees.
Carl Edwards and his riders escaped serious injury after a sideswipe at the Ss curve north of Carthage. The other driver a salesman from Ohio was not identified. Both cars sustained considerable damage.
The Camera Club will meet at 8 o clock next Wednesday night in the Community Center. Mr and Mrs Stanford Collins and Mr and Mrs Elvet Moore were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Par vel Moore at the Copper Kettle in Morristown Tuesday evening.
The 1955 Fall Festival committee led by co chairs Jack Tweedy and Fred Parish outlined a three day plan to raise funds for the Community Center. Activities include a Thursday church supper a Friday talent show on September 30 tickets at Leadbetter Pharmacy and a Lions Club food stand Friday evening. Saturday features children's program a parade cake walk and a queen contest with crowning at the dance. A bicycle contest by merchants is hinted at with details forthcoming.
Henry G. Stager and Clarence Tuttle embark on a fishing trip in the Smoky Mountains, enjoying a day outdoors together.
Mr and Mrs Russell Roland and others returned Friday night from Niagara Falls and Canada. Various relatives visited and hosted in Knightstown Morristown Greenfield and New Castle with gatherings including a wiener roast and dinners. Visitors included families from Indianapolis Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and Terre Haute among others.
Shirley Smith of Ripley Township placed fifth among 18 in the state 4-H Club Baking Judging contest at the fair, vying for a Washington and New York trip. Donald Gray of Center Township led in Angus with Golden Dawn Farms claiming sixth in two bulls class, ninth in yearling pair, and tenth in junior yearling Angus bull.
The Rush County league opened with two wins for Carthage as they beat Arlington 1 0 and defeated Manilla 15 14. Milroy defeated Manilla 17 6, New Salem beat Mays 12 9, while New Salem and Arlington won Tuesday games with Milroy and Mays respectively. Local social notes follow, including visits by residents to ISSC Home events and Purdue-bound travels.
Mr and Mrs Ed Miner in poor health entered Jackson Nursing Home Rushville Wednesday morning. Mrs Howard Winslow entered Rush Memorial hospital earlier in the week.
Mrs. Ethel Loudenback wife of Frank Loudenback died suddenly Monday at her Greenfield home. Services will be Thursday at 10 am at Pasco Memorial Mortuary Greenfield. Mrs. Loudenback was known by Carthage friends.

Knightstown Falcons defeated Charlottesville Eagles 13 3 in a baseball game on the Eagles diamond. Both teams had eight hits. Charlottesville pitchers were Kitner Muegge and Oakes with Souffler catching. Moore pitched for Knightstown with Taylor catching.
Parents and teachers attended a basket dinner as the Carth P T A opened its year. A parade float and a home made candy booth were approved for Fall Festival, with the slogan Child Safety is Everybody s Business guiding all meetings.
Mr and Mrs Donald Ruby and Mr and Mrs Hugh Weber attended the regional REMC convention in Fort Wayne on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
Mrs. Richard McNabb mourns the sudden death of her father Jesse Essmger of Potosi Missouri. Funeral services were conducted on the preceding Wednesday. Dr and Mrs Richard McNabb departed for Missouri Monday night.
Students return to Carthage School Sept 2 to discover improvements from May including 539 square yards plastered, new ceilings, two new walls, 400 feet of fluorescent lights, 26 163 square feet cement floors coated with paint, 22 916 square feet wooden floors sealed and 13 gallons floor soap.
