Hoosier Dairy Herds Larger Despite Decline
In Indiana dairy herds on DHIA test run larger despite overall declines. The average herd is about 25 cows as labor shortages and higher wages push adoption of labor saving devices. Purdue extension dairy man G A Williams notes more cows require more feed stalls and equipment but better feeding and management can raise net returns. Consider disposing of low producers and maintaining healthy udders with correct milking and regular hours for milk.

Allow each cow at least six weeks rest between lactations and consider culling milking if daily production falls below one gallon. Limit grain to four pounds per cow daily with ample roughage and maintain lifetime production records.
