Carthage Fall Festival Opens With Parades Shows and Dance
The 1961 Carthage Fall Festival starts next week with banners, a parade on Saturday, and a dance that night. Queen contestants from four grades participate, with voting for the festival fund. A Flower Show, Smorgasbord, Lions Euchre Party, and a Talent Show titled South Sea Fantasies highlight opening events. Tickets for events run 50 to 75 cents, with a 5 piece band Mus The Music Masters playing the Friday dance. Five Lou Ann rides will entertain festivalgoers, and entrants for Beard-Growing Contest and Cake Walk follow. Parade marshals Lee Patton and Roy Small coordinate the parade.

Explosion Kills Son-in-Law in Florida Incident
Richard Beise of Starke Florida was killed by an explosion while blowing up an air tank. Survived by widow Mary Shutt Beise and three young children along with his parents. Mrs Russell Shutt of Carthage visited. Funeral services set for Saturday morning.

Ira Hopper of Indianapolis is hired to replace Harold Taylor as assistant director at Carthage schools. Hopper holds a BS in music and education from Jordan Conservatory of Music Butler University with five years teaching experience. He comes from Triton Consolidated School Shelby County and has been a professional musician including work with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He led a band in Europe during World War I. he and his wife and their sixteen year old son reside in Indianapolis.

Arlington defeated Carthage 10 to 8 in Friday baseball opener. Bob Kramer hit a bases loaded triple in the fifth to put Arlington ahead. Gatewood and Smith doubled for Carthage in the fifth. Arlington’s Wooten and Baker added two base hits. pitchers combined for six walks and seven strikeouts for Arlington, while Carthage hurlers fanned eight and issued 11 walks.
