Miss Lenora Jones shared tales of surviving 3 years and 3 months as a prisoner in the Philippines with cousin Mrs. Anna Sipe and friends. She recalled bombardments, rumors of American troops, and her escape aided by clothing and money while recovering at Grace Jessup and Maude Jones’s home in Rushville.
Will H. Smith announced that all revenue offices in the state will be closed on Saturdays as the department moves to a 40 hour week. The September 15 due date for the third 1945 estimated tax installment remains. Payments mailed to the Collector of Internal Revenue, Indianapolis, will be treated as timely if received by Monday September 17.
George Zinkel, chemist for Container Corporation's local plant, spoke to the Lions about paper making. He traced ancient to modern industry, noting U S consumption rising from 20 to 300 pounds per person in 65 years and urged optimism about agricultural by products.
The Post Mark reports Carl Lewis of Rushville born 1912, disabled after age ten, turned to gold wire name pins. He formed Gold Wire Artist, joined the mailbag club, began mail order work in 1940, married Dotty in 1943, and owns a home funded by his craft with two daughters.
Capt Frederick Fitch on 30 day furlough visits his mother Mrs Martha Fitch in Indianapolis after 28 months overseas. He serves as receiving clerk with 94th Evacuating Hospital and heads to a camp in Arkansas. Wooten Fitch of Evansville and Rayburn Fitch in Solom on Md. eligible for discharge.
In Hawaii, Mr and Mrs Fletcher Edwards, the parents, report a letter from Jerry arrives. The note confirms his location and contact.
Rush County plans a county hospital funded by bonds totaling $100 assessed valuation. The first-year tax would be about 5.4 cents per $100, averaging $1.08 for the typical Rush County homeowner, with costs tapering over 25 years. A 160 acre farm valued at $10,000 would pay about $5.40 initially, decreasing later. Proponents argue health security and home care justify the expense.
Mr and Mrs Henry Stinger attended the National Muzzle Loader Shooters event at Friendship Indiana, where about 2500 people gathered for the three day shoot. Participants came from across America to compete at the famous range. The event is sponsored by Mr Crosley of station WLW and featured the “Bug” gun mount and the large muzzle loading rifle with photographs in the sports pages.
Headquarters Squadron of the 67th Reconnaissance Group departs Camp Detroit near Laon France for deployment to the United States under Col. Russell A. Borg. Capt. James Henley son of Mr and Mrs Howard E Henley of Carthage serves with the group which flew over 6000 combat missions in six campaigns and earned four Distinguished Unit Citations as a key eye of the First Army.
Indiana's mid July to mid August 1945 employment showed a 2.8 percent drop in manufacturing jobs to 403,387 wage earners and an 8.6 percent fall in weekly factory payrolls to 17,605,536. Non manufacturing employment slipped 1.2 percent to 164,779 while weekly pay rolls fell 5.2 percent to 5,144,615 though August 1944 levels remained above.
Twenty two members of Boy Scout Troop No 26 with acting Scoutmaster Lee Silver held a court of review Friday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs Henry Stinger. Knife throwing watermelon and games enlivened the event.
Mrs Em ma Willcutts aged 85 died Sunday afternoon at Wilson Memorial Hospital Sidney Ohio from cerebral thrombosis after an illness begun last January. A former Carthage resident and widow of William H Willcutts she is survived by several children. Body sent to Greentown Indiana for funeral services held Wednesday afternoon.
A Girl Scout meeting will be held next Wednesday after school September 19 at four o clock in the library. All members are urged to attend as a surprise awaits the girls.
The Annual Corn Soybean Field Day will be held Thursday September 20 at the Soil and Crops Farm east of Lafayette on State Road 26. Tours depart from the grove every ten minutes starting 8 30 a m with demonstrations on varieties fertility and nitrogen use. Dr E L Butz of Purdue will speak on agriculture outlook and a temporary silo demo caps the program followed by a noon cafeteria lunch and transport arranged through the county extension office.
At the first annual meeting for election of directors for the Ripley Community Center three new directors were voted in to serve for a year. Josephine Alexander, Donald Ruby and Howard Winslow join the nine member board. A financial report detailed remodeling expenditures. The first moving sale on Saturday night September 8 netted $60 with about half spent on expenses.
Richmond social security manager urges all workers aged 65 or older who stop work to contact a field office immediately. He says even short-term or future work, or illness, should prompt checking rights to monthly insurance payments under social security.
The Carthage Community Center theatre showed its first regular film in years last Saturday with 241 attendees. A three weekly show schedule begins, featuring titles like Something For the Boys Ghost Town Hangover Square Thunderhead Son Flicka Sergeant Mike plus two newsreels.

Ex Sergeant Ralph Duncan of Greenfield visited his uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Jasper Nigh last Wednesday. Duncan was a Greenfield newspaperman before enlisting three years ago. He served two years overseas and recently separated from the army at Camp Attenbury. He plans to return to the Greenfield Republican after a short rest. Duncan flew from Naples, Italy to the U S in 47 hours.
Verne Plummer was taken ill Monday and rushed to Methodist Hospital Monday night for emergency surgery to remove a ruptured appendix.
The Wesleyan Methodist churches sponsor programs on WHBU and WKMO from 7 30 to 8 00 on Sunday mornings offering faith messages to listeners.

Pvt Earl E. McCorkle completed seventeen weeks of training at Camp Joseph T. Robinson near Little Rock and is being transferred to Camp Rucker in Alabama for further service.

Mrs. Robert Tuttle has word that her husband Sgt Robert F. Tuttle stationed on Iwo Jima has been promoted to Staff Sergeant. SSgt Tuttle was recently promoted to Sergeant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Tuttle, co publisher of the Carthage Citizen.
Sgt Samuel J Gold son of Samuel Gold Sr west of Carthage was discharged September 7 at Camp Atterbury. He earned the EAME ribbon with six battle stars and the Distinguished Unit Citation with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
Mrs. Alma S. Henley announces the birth of a son, Edward Dale, weighing seven pounds three ounces, born Wednesday September 5 at the Whiting home in Battle Creek. The child’s mother is formerly Joanne Alexander of Carthage.
