Mrs. Sarah Robinson has been quite ill this week. Mrs. Sam O. McCarty remains seriously ill. Mrs. J. T. McDaniel has been ill for the past few days. Mrs. Fred Stevens shows some improvement in the clinic at New Castle.
The 1945 annual 4 H Tomato Show will be held Saturday September 8 in the first floor corridor of the Rush County Court House. Harold Frakes of Noble township will judge. Exhibits must be in by 9 30 a m. Judging at 10 a m. Classes A B and C ribbons and premiums awarded. Tomatoes sold by exhibitors after judging. Club members furnish hampers plates and peck containers provided. Tomatoes removable after 4 p m.
The Hospital Council asks for books games ash trays playing cards fishing tackle and home repair tools to benefit the Soldiers Hospital at Camp Atterbury. Mrs Henry L Stinger leads the drive and urges donations by mid month contacting her by telephone 1-26.
The American Foundation for Animal Health reports sleeping sickness in horses now carried by chicken mites. The virus was isolated from mites on a farm with affected horses. birds can harbor the virus year to year and pass it via mosquitoes ticks or assassin bugs. Control measures include vaccination where present and reducing biting insects in stables.
Pfc William Frost arrived on a 10 day furlough last Tuesday to visit his parents Mr and Mrs William Frost of Carthage. He will return to Camp Riley Kansas on September 15.
Marshal King warns motorists that state policemen will closely enforce speed limits and punish violators. The measure aims to protect pedestrians, including children, amid rising injuries and deaths following gas rationing.
The Stinger exhibit closes this weekend after three weeks of Indian relics and other items drawing broad interest. Highlights include a scalp, a grotesque Whiffle Pouff created from wood growths, a three pound tooth, a mammoth hoof, a whale ear drum, and artifacts linked to Blazing Star the early resident.
Roscoe Brown had a ton sillectomy Saturday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Mrs. Kenneth Rhodes underwent a tonsillectomy Saturday at City Hospital in Rushville.
The local Lions hold a regular business meeting next Monday night September 10. Secretary Moore notes it is not a dinner meeting. Ladies Night is set for September 24 with Howard K. Lewis from Lions International as the guest speaker.
The community Scouts night will be held at the Methodist church at Charlottesville next Sunday night September 9 at 8 00 o clock Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts will be on the program The Court of Honor will be held for the Boy Scouts Rev Steele will deliver ya talk and there will be musical numbers A motion picture A Trail to Citizenship will be shown Everyone is invited to come.
Mary Brookshire age 17 daughter of Mrs Loma Brookshire of Carthage begins her newspaper career at The Citizen on Sept 3. Norma Lee Parish, who worked there in the summer, returns to school. Brookshire graduates Carthage High School last spring and will work in the office.
The Rush County Extension Office offers free soil testing to farmers this fall to determine fertilizer needs for wheat crops. The test shows potash and phosphate levels, limestone needs for legumes, and total fertilizer quantities. farmers with questions should contact the county agent’s office.
The library will open at 12:00 noon instead of 2:00 PM. The new noon hours apply on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the nine months of the upcoming school term.
Mrs Clarence Post wife of Clarence Post of Knightstown is at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis for a serious surgical operation. She is expected to be released next Sunday. Mr and Mrs Post own the Gamble Store at Knightstown.
Alba Hurst of Arlington dies at 74 after a severe heart attack last Tuesday. He lived in Rush county and was manager of the Arlington Telephone Company at the time of his death. He is survived by his widow, a daughter Mrs. Joseph Cotton of Homer, and two sisters and three brothers.
Lima beans on 92 acres in the Ripley community are set to be harvested next week. Guy Ewing, contractor for Stokley Bros., expects a fair yield, behind a prior good pea harvest. Two hullers will operate as the season begins. He notes postwar food demand remains high and prices should stay stable for some time.

Rush County residents will vote on issuing 390000 in bonds for a county hospital. Petitions begin circulation as Hospital Committee outlines costs covering building grounds equipment and fees. Tax impact shown at about 54 cents per thousand for year one and 52 cents thereafter for 25 years. Proponents note bequests and contributions could reduce expenses.
Greenfield Race Track president Everet Leary announces races resume this Saturday night September 8 after a three year war related break. The rebuilt seating and resurfaced quarter mile track promise thrills as 24 Midwest drivers compete starting at 8:30 p.m. Leary, a returned Marine, will speak at the start.
Indiana Department of Conservation urges groups to reserve fall and winter short camps early. Bunk cabins with cots and mattresses surround central lodge areas with cookies and fireplaces. Parks with group camps include Pokagon Dunes Tippecanoe River McCormick's Creek Shakamak Versailles. Reservations go to park superintendents, not central offices. Tent and trailer facilities offered at most properties.
Robert White a Rush county farm boy two miles south of Charrettsville won the first prize pen of Hampshire lambs at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis last Tuesday. He received the ewe lamb from C M Porter and sons of Falmouth. White is president of the Rush county 4 H and is known for a twelve year school attendance record. He graduated at Carthage last spring.
A six week run begins Sept 10 on Columbia’s Michael Scott Presents with The Three Musketeers in five dramatic installments. The Count of Monte Cristo is also adapted in a new Du sana drama series directed and produced by John Barnes.
