The Carthage School Band finished 8th out of 19 in the Farmer's Day Parade at the State Fairgrounds and received a $25 prize. A Tuesday business meeting of the Better Business Association of Carthage approved a half page ad donation for the Fall Festival Talent Show program and discussed other regular monthly matters.
Richard C. Dunagan and Brenda J. Stock of Shelbyville were married here Monday afternoon September 7 at the home of Justice of the Peace Lon McCorkle.
Paul E. Sigler of Container Corporation announces the Great Ideas of Western Man traveling exhibit will open at the Gallery of the Art Association of Richmond in Richmond Indiana on September 13 and run through October 2 featuring 70 original paintings.
Fletcher Edwards of Carthage and Frank Edwards of Fortville were feted Sunday at Mohawk Indiana home of Robert Edwards for their 70th birthday. Sixty-six relatives attended the cooperative dinner, Fletcher and Frank sharing sixteen grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The Arlington High School band directed by Ora Pemberton took part in the Farmers Day parade at the Indiana State Fair.
Wilbur McCorkle of Carthage entered Rush Memorial Hospital for observation on Monday. James Sparks of R. R. 1 at New Castle Clinic for two weeks of treatment and observation in room 211. Vinton Hudson of Carthage R. R. 1 is a patient at Rush Memorial Hospital for tests and observation.
Miss Pam Hunt was honored by an invitation to march as a majorette with the State FFA band in the Farmers Day Parade held Thursday at the State Fairgrounds.
Mr and Mrs Me Hichard Carthage and Mr and Mrs Fred Phief fer Elmhurst Illinois returned to their homes Labor Day after spending a ten day vacation at Oak Grove Resort Chetek Wisconsin.
Mrs. Gouldie Kyser and Sharlee Kyser stayed with Rev. and Mrs. Everett Chapman in Watseka Illinois and with Rev. Allan Watson and family in Gary Indiana over Labor Day weekend. They accompanied Mrs. Hattie Innis home after visiting in the Watson home. Rev and Mrs Watson and Hattie Innis recently attended the National Convention of the Christian Church in Denver Colorado.
The Junior MYF gathered Sunday evening at the Methodist Church. President Mike Whitfield opened the meeting as thirteen members plus counselors and pianist Virginia Whitfield joined in. David Whitfield led songs, Diana Whitfield read the secretary’s report, and John Terhune treasurer presented the homes update. A discussion on Billy Graham was held as Torfotces covered Israelites and the Midianites. Refreshments followed with Diana Whitfield and Nancy Adams assisting.
Cora Wise of Milton Indiana was a Sunday guest of Miss Ruth White, sharing a friendly afternoon in the town.
Readable sections show the CHS Four Ways staff for 1959 60 with editors and supervisors. Student officers in each class are listed from seniors through freshmen and eighth and seventh grades. The Senior band rehearses for Farmers Day Parade at the Indiana State Fair with a TV telecast on WFBM channel 6. CHS notes cover class elections and a Momma letter filled with family anecdotes. Cross country and junior magazine drive plans are noted.
A school plans a dance band and urges interested students to contact Mr. Taylor as soon as possible to participate.

O. J. Readmond of Anderson Township, longtime assistant highway supervisor, was named to Rush County highway department chief by the county commissioners. He succeeds Waldo Mohr, who died last week from burns on a road project. Readmond will be paid 400 dollars monthly. Three assistant district assistants were appointed to replace his former role: Darrell Rowan northern district, William Borders middle district, and Vernon Patterson southern district. The commission also accepted West Coal Company of Rushville bid of 12 dollars per ton for next year’s courthouse and highway garage coal, 75 cents below the current price.
LuelLa Stone 89 of Morristown died Monday at a Shelby County Nursing Home after a long illness. She was a member of Morristown Christian Church and born August 31 1870 near Freeport, daughter of Benjamin F Stone and Hulda Cory Stone. Two nieces survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Frazier Funeral Home, with burial in Hanover Cemetery.
Hazel Alexander of Carthage R. R. is again named United Fund Drive Chairman as the drive runs October 1 to 15. County and township officials plan a solicitation program with agencies including Rush County Achievement Program Rush County 4H Purdue Round-Up American Red Cross Mental Health Association Boy Scouts Salvation Army U S O Youth Foundation Kid Kanteen Carthage. Kindergarten will open Monday September 14 at 8 10 a m A parent or guardian must accompany each child on Monday morning Children must be five years old on or before October 15 A birth certificate is required Children living in Ripley Township must register by September 14 as state entrance is not permitted
The Carthage Band Boosters call a meeting on Tuesday September 15 at 7 30 p m at the school. All parents are urged to attend this important gathering.
Mr and Mrs Donald Ruby returned home Tuesday from a week long vacation at Barbee Lake Their daughter Mrs Max Ellis and her Knightstown family stayed at the Ruby country home during their absence

Bayard Baker served as guest speaker at Rush Lodge No. 580 F. A. M. last Wednesday night September 2 honoring members with 25 years or more of lodge membership. Emblems were presented to 25 year members and additional honorees listed include Josiah Binford Cyrus Coffin John DeSchipper Edward Gurley Morris Henley Fred Hill Vinton Hudson Abram Lewis Robert Moore Otto McCarty Clancy Nigh Fred Parish Roy Stanley Verne Plummer Ertel Price Harold Ruby Leonard Ruby John Scull James Tarbet A B Thompson Ross Tweedy John Walton Arthur White and Arthur Winfield among others not in attendance.
Benton Blessinger aged 63 of Carthage died suddenly Wednesday night in Petoskey Michigan. Hampton Mortuary is handling arrangements. No arrangements were made at press time.
Mays edged Carthage 10 to 9 after scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Charles Custer. Carthage pitchers Doughty and Muir struck out seven and walked 11 as Grandison allowed nine hits with ten strikeouts. Foust led Carthage with three hits and Marsh added a double.
New Salem won its first high school baseball game at Arlington 9 to 3 on Tuesday. A six run second inning gave the Eagles a big lead while Arlington was limited to 1 hit. Reiboldt earned the win with 16 strikeouts, 5 hits allowed, and 4 walks.

The Carthage FFA met at the school last Thursday at 8 p.m. Discussions covered the gilt chain, Breeders Gazette sales, and upcoming distribution. A motion passed to build a Fall Festival float, and a hayride for losers of the pest control contest with Wiener roast for winners is scheduled for Sept 25 at 7 30. Joe Foust presented the treasurer’s report before adjournment by Ron Sullivan with Glen Smith and Ray Plue reporting.
Funeral services were held Monday morning for Mrs Annie Craven age 87 at Raywick Kentucky. She was the mother of Mrs Henry Whitfield and Mrs Beth Whitfield of Carthage. Craven had been in failing health for months and died last Thursday night. Attendees from this area included Henry Whitfield Harry Stacy Charles Whitfield Jr Mrs Billy Hinton and daughter Beth Whitfield James Whitfield Leon Whitfield and Charles Whitfield of Carthage R R 2.
Mr and Mrs Larry Morris of McAllen Texas return home after two weeks with relatives in Avilla Indiana and Carthage Iowa They will both enter Pan American College Edinburg Texas next week for the fall term He a senior she a freshman Mrs Morris formerly Miss Janet Heim before marriage
The Juniors of East Street Christian Church met Thursday at 7 p.m. with twelve attendees including ten members and two teachers, Mrs. Lloyd Manuel and Robert Kendall among the staff, plus Mrs. Ken.
Mr and Mrs Gerald Brent and daughter of Bedford were guests last Thursday of Mr and Mrs Frank Hampton. Saturday evening guests were Mr and Mrs Kenneth Hampton and family of Lexington Kentucky.
The Carthage School faculty were guests of the Parent Teachers Organization at the Community Center Tuesday evening for a co operative dinner. Rev. Robert Kendall offered prayer. Frank Hampton led the meeting with introductions and a brief history of each teacher.
Grand Master J Carl Humphrey announces Sunday September 13 as the annual Masonic Fraternity visitation to the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. Thousands attend the Masonic Family gathering featuring a 2 million nursing hospital, a Franklin High Band concert, and services by DeMolay Job’s Daughters and the Rainbow Girls. The home sits on 320 acres near Franklin and houses 435 residents.
