Most Carthage stores will close Monday September 7 for Labor Day. Attendance at Victory Field saw Lowell Brown Charles Whitfield Frank Hampton and his son Rickey watch the game between Indianapolis and Ft Worth Monday night.
Frank Hampton, president of the 12th District Funeral Directors Association, attended the district meeting on Wednesday at the Clay Pool Hotel in Indianapolis.
The committee met to plan the annual show titled Fall Festival Round-Up with a western theme. The event is set for October 2 and co chairs are Mrs Kenneth Land and Mrs Hubert Hunt with members Mrs Ed Carroll John A Ruby and Eugene R Gardner.
Mr and Mrs Tivis Fitch Barbara and Marlin Wilson Mr and Mrs Paul Crevidence Mr and Mrs Gene Wilson and son attended the Sesquicentennial celebration and parade at Madison Indiana Saturday They were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Roy Hearne and daughter and Fitch Barbara and Marlin Wilson were supper guests of Mrs Verla Keller Madison
Call for piano donations goes to the community as Carthage School seeks instruments to expand its music department. The school needs a usable piano to support its growing program and instruction.
Robert Walker of Carthage Ce cil Moore of Rushville and Bill Scott of Milroy attended the 79th annual Indiana Democratic Editorial Association meeting held Saturday at the Sheraton French Lick Hotel in French Lick Indiana.
State Trooper James Kleiman investigated a Sunday evening crash south of Knightstown on State Road 140. Thelma J. Weidner 39 of Carthage and Robert P. Miller 20 of Knights Town were involved. Miller's brakes failed and his car struck Weidner's rear while she waited at an iron bridge. Damages totaled about 400 dollars with Weidner suffering a minor neck injury.
The Rev. Herman Parker and Mrs Parker will move to the Carthage Friends Church parsonage this week from Farmland Indiana. Parker previously served at Nettle Creek Church near Hagerstown and will begin as pastor at Carthage Friends Church this Sunday.
Parents and guests are invited to the first P T O meeting next Tuesday September 8 at 6 30 p m at the Carthage Community Center. It is a pitch in supper to meet the Carthage School faculty and greet the new teachers.
Robert White of Carthage R. R. left Sunday for the Indiana State Fairgrounds to serve as assistant superintendent at the Sheep Barns for the duration of the fair.
Local conservation club schedules a meeting next Thursday September 10 at 7 30 PM at the usual venue. Members are urged to attend and discuss upcoming projects.
Mr and Mrs John Wood of Carthage purchase the Fred Mc Manus property on South Main Street Carthage. They and their daughter plan to move next week. Mrs Wood is formerly Gertrude Stacey. Mr and Mrs Charles Elmore have rented the upstairs apartment from the Woods.
Rev. and Mrs. Lewis H. May moved into the Walnut Ridge Friends parsonage on August 15 and began duties September 1. They attended Indiana Yearly Meeting sessions and bring prior pastorates from St. Marys Ohio and Bethel Friends near Marion Indiana. Both graduates of the Cleveland Bible Institute.
The Juniors of East Street Christian Church met last Thursday at 7 p.m. with thirteen in attendance eleven members and two teachers Refreshments were served Vernon L Little Reporter.
The Junior MYF gathered Sunday evening led by President Mike Whitfield. Members and two counselors attended along with pianist Carol Carver. Diana Whitfield reported as secretary and John Terhune led scripture and treasurer duties. They discussed purchasing MYF pins and a banner.
The Tweedy Memorial Community Center board met Tuesday with President Fred Parish presiding. They thanked citizens for support in fall festivals and detailed expenditures for the past year including chairs, draperies, a water cooler, tables, and closets. A project to install new entrance doors was discussed and Treasurer William Dixon reported on finances.
Enjoyments are reported for several Carthage area families returning from trips to Florida Ohio West Virginia and Virginia. Henry Stenger and family visited relatives in Miami Pompano Beach while Henry Jr stayed with his parents east of Carthage. The Brown family and others vacationed in Ohio West Virginia and Virginia and Gail Barry's group traveled to Thomasville North Carolina.
Mr and Mrs Robert Moore and Mr and Mrs Eugene Leisure and family and Mr and Mrs Jack Moore of Pendleton returned home last week from an enjoyable ten days fishing trip to Leech Lake Walker Minnesota.
The Chi Rho met with 18 members and 1 guest. Opening honors included the flag salute and Bible pledge. Karen Siler and Bonita Gatewood led songs, with refreshments by Larry Bush and Steve Marshall. Mrs. Ruby read a story titled Today Is The Tomorrow and the group discussed it. Mariann Wachtstetter closed with prayer. Linda Apple, News Reporter.
The Methodist Youth Fellowship meets Monday at 7 30 p.m. and votes to move to 7 p.m. for school start. They plan to attend Billy Graham in Indianapolis on Oct 6 and to hold a sub district meeting in two weeks at Marietta Indiana.
The 1958 Carthage graduating class gathered Sunday at Baker Park New Castle for a noon dinner social and an afternoon of swimming and tennis. Attendees included Marilyn Jackson Dorothy Edwards Bob Harrold Larry Grocox Ronnie Magee Kirby Overman Paul Turner James Terhune and Mr and Mrs Albert Stewart.
Covington star Stan Bowman started last in a 15 car Modified field at Lawrenceburg Speedway Saturday night and worked into the lead before lap four. By lap 21 Bowman held a half lap advantage before a right rear wheel failure sidelined him, sending Bill Dugger into the lead with Roy Robbins and Frankie Mack close behind in a tight point race at the oval.
Mr. and Mrs. Homer Bowers called on Mrs. Steward Jackson at the New Castle Clinic Sunday. Evening guests included Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Gurley and family of Knightstown and Mrs. Denver Tipton and family. Mrs. Leona Bennett returned home at Fairmount Sunday after a two week vacation with her daughter, Mrs. Clayton Todd.
The Hoosier Motor Club issued a safety push urging drivers to watch for children crossing near schools as term begins. A poster reading School's Open Drive Carefully will be displayed. Governor Handley proclaims the first week of September as School's Open Week to remind drivers to take extra care of schoolchildren.
Mary Draper was installed as the 1959 60 president of the Carthage American Legion Auxiliary at the Community Center. Ruth Harper of Greenfield installation officer and Norma McKain led opening prayers and proceedings.
Mrs. Charles Walls and daughter Carol hosted guests including Mr and Mrs Raymond Kennedy and Judy and Lynn. Also with Mrs Beulah Whitfield's group they welcomed Wayne Walters of Cary Illinois Myrtle Randall and Blanche Coffin who had not seen for 45 years. The evening included photos. Larry Liggett stayed a week with his uncle Russell Shutt and Mrs Shutt.
Purdue statisticians forecast Aug 1 corn output at 354.9 million bushels, up 28 percent from 1958 and 41 percent above average, with a record 65 bushels per acre. Soybeans projected at 58.941 million bushels, up 1 percent from last year and 42 percent above average, with a 27 bushel per acre yield. Oat, barley, rye, hay and livestock figures also reported amid moisture shortages and some rain relief.
Mrs Edna Henley left Rush Memorial Hospital Tuesday evening following a two week treatment period and is now at home.
Arlington Lions Club recognized thirty eight members at a Tuesday meeting in the Arlington School with 100 percent attendance pins. Eston Macy, a charter member, earned top honors for eight years of perfect attendance. Deputy Governor Marland Adams of Rushville presented the pins to the inductees and a long list of attendees was named.
Principal Wendall Adams lists enrollments by grade with teachers and sponsors named. Carthage baseball schedule released with games from Sept. 4 through Oct. 6 including a county tournament and home and away dates.
Mr and Mrs Gene Wilson and son Bruce hosted Mr and Mrs Paul Crevidence for dinner at Wilhelm s Cafe last Friday for their 33rd wedding anniversary. Recent guests at the Dixons included Mrs Dixons brother and his family from Hampton Virginia. Rev and Mrs Gene Miller of Wilmore Kentucky visited the Hawkins and relatives. Other Saturday evening guests were Mr and Mrs Bill Kinnett and daughter of Dillsboro.
Waldo MohrRush County highway supervisor died from burns suffered July 20 while lighting warning flares near Homer. He was 57 and died at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis after being moved from Rush Memorial Hospital. He served two terms as Rush County commissioner before joining the highway department as assistant supervisor. He was born December 5 1901 and survived by wife Nelda Arnold, a son, four daughters, a sister, a brother and ten grandchildren. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Friday at Wyatt Moore Memorial with burial at Arlington East Hill Cemetery.
Kathryn Haydock Binford age 86 formerly of Carthage died Tuesday September 2 in Haviland Kansas where she had lived 30 years. She leaves five grandchildren and three great grandchildren with one son Ermal predeceasing her. Services at 2 PM Sunday Pasco Mortuary Greenfield with burial Parke Cemetery Greenfield. Friends may call after noon Saturday.
Earl Frank Priest of Rushville Township is the new Farmers Home Administration committee member replacing Hobart Han whose three year term expired June 30. Priest farms south of Rushville, rents 260 acres plus 80 on the home farm, raises purebred Berkshire hogs and operates 40 sows and 80 ewes. He is an Army veteran and directed racing on the Rush County Fair Board. Gail Abernathy and Alvin Martin join him on the county committee for the coming year.
Rev. and Mrs. Robert Shockney and their son will relocate this Friday to Lynn Indiana where he assumes the role of pastor at the Friends Church.
Pamela and Mellis Beck of New Castle are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Beck this week, spending time with relatives and friends.
