Keelboats and the Early Ohio River Packet Era

The piece recalls keelboats on the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh from about 1794. It details two fifteen by one hundred foot keelboats with separate cabins, port holes, and cannon, travel times of roughly a month, and describes their wooden prison-like interiors and stoves. It notes keelboats as sturdy, stable, and riverworthy despite later steamboats, with crews of eight to twenty and lengths up to a hundred feet.

The article recalls the grueling upstream voyage on keelboats from New Orleans to St Louis. Crews used iron shod poles, sweeps, and cordelles to battle current and shallow bottoms, sometimes aiding with ropes or a windlass. Mike Fink is noted as a famed figure, while keelboats are said to have higher crew fatalities than the Roman trireme.
