Miss Maude Lewis Dies Former Carthage Teacher
Miss Maude M. Lewis 84 retired teacher and librarian died at her Pendleton home August 17. She taught in Carthage schools for four years and spent 38 years as a primary teacher in Madison county. She later served as assistant librarian in Pendleton for 20 years. Survivors include sister Evangeline Lewis a nephew Lloyd Lewis and niece Louise Lewis all of Chicago. Missing Man Arrives Here on Short Furlough
Sergeant Joseph Elmer Porter, long listed as missing in action in France, is home on a three week furlough visiting his parents Mr and Mrs John Porter. He arrived Tuesday from Florida after a Liberator mission over France where he and the co-pilot survived with minor injuries while the rest of the seven crew perished. Porter entered service November 4 1942 and after the furlough will report to duty in Miami Beach Florida.
