Mrs E P Stanley and her young son returned to their Knox home at the start of the week as Mrs Stanley recovers from a recent illness.
The Carthage Blue Raiders start the basketball season hosting Wilkinson Saturday night at the local gymnas ium. Wilkinson has edged Carthage in two straight close games, but locals expect a spirited contest and a Raiders victory. Coach Morris may start Spacey Winslow L Hunt Mann Mechain McCorkle Pingleton Turner M Hunt and Pitts.
The Indiana Marketing Quota Association officers call a meeting at the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis on Saturday November 1 at 12 o clock. Farmers and others affected by Triple A restrictions are urged to attend. Alva O. Bitner Rushville secretary, Lamont O Harre president Haven S. Davis vice president.
Richard Sipe of Knightstown, a former Carthage resident and local schoolteacher, is among 404 Army Aviation Cadet scholarship winners. Winners include 178 from Ohio and will report for enlistment after November 1 at Fort Hayes, Fort Thomas, Fort Knox, or Fort Harrison. Sipe will train at Kelly Field and report November 12.
Mr and Mrs W C Nelson have word from their grandson Charles Omer Six who left October 8 for the army. Omer is stationed at a fort in Oklahoma Battery B 28th Infantry and B N 7th Reg He is getting along fine.
The Carthage churches announce the start of union services with the first meeting at the Methodist Church on Sunday November 9. Pastor Murray S Kenworthy of the Friends church will preach the opening sermon. The host church handles music and invites a union choir from the community.
Fire damaged the Knightstown Central school building with an estimated 4000 in damage, likely caused by an overheated furnace pipe. Paul Kuhn discovered flames at 7 15 A M, the Knights town Fire Department confined the blaze to the northwest section, and the fourth grade room floor caved in damaging the heating plant. Insurance covered the damage and students returned to class Thursday morning.
Mrs Ellen McIlvaine receives word that her sister Miss Irene Binford age 75 died at her Santa Ana California home Thursday evening The body was cremated Miss Binford had lived in this community until 1903 when she moved to California Mrs McIlvaine spent last winter with relatives in California
Mr and Mrs James B Terhune attended the funeral service for James H Miller cousin of Mr Terhune at New Salem Monday afternoon at 2 30 oclock
Dick McNabb forecasts opening Indiana high school basketball week with Manilla at Fairland and Wilkinson at Carthage among matchups. He predicts Carthage by 5 to 10, Clarksbury over New Salem, Manilla by 10, and Arlington by 10 in a season set to start November 1.
Leroy Stevens, son of Mr and Mrs Ertle Stevens from near Gwynneville, was severely injured Sunday when a steel rim slipped while he removed a tire from a truck. He suffered a crushed nose and was rushed to Major hospital in Shelbyville for treatment.

Unemployment claims by Rush county workers totaled 1601 in September, down from 1924 in August and 2453 in September 1940, per the Connersville Employment Security office. Statewide benefits in September were 404410, a 26.5 percent drop from August and 30.7 percent from last year, with total benefits since 1938 approaching 40000000 and 398, as 38966138 in claims have been paid and 3869614 checks issued. September local awards were 239 to rural residents and 1362 to Rushville residents.

Mr and Mrs John Hinshaw announce the birth of their daughter born Thursday October 23 weighing seven pounds The new arrival has been named Susan Jano and joins the family as their first child.
Ora Mattix of Duncan farm near Carthage suffered serious back and chest injuries with cuts and bruises when his trousers tangled in a brake and he fell beneath a tractor combine. He was found in a critical condition by Mabel Duncan and Charles Pearson, and taken by Thompson ambulance to Henry county hospital.
In Knights town Mrs Betty Campbell was fined 5 dollars and costs 4 30 after a Thursday arrest for reckless driving and speeding in the 20 mile zone on Main street. Ernest Clark pleaded guilty Friday to public intoxication and received a 3 dollar fine plus 4 80 costs and was ordered to leave town.
The 1937 Act defines a resident as a person who has lived in Indiana for six months prior to license application. It presumes nonresidency if a person is not a qualified voter in their claimed county. Licenses are issued by county clerks and designated agents in hardware and sporting goods stores.
