Rye Is Best Winter Cover Crop For Soil Health
Agronomist E C Blair of North Carolina State College of Agriculture says rye is the surest winter cover crop for poor soils and offers strong erosion control and soil tilth benefits. Sown Aug to Dec with one bushel seed per acre, rye provides fall and spring grazing and should be turned under when heads form to avoid soil moisture issues.

Careful Winter Storage of Apples for Use
A guide on preserving apples through winter emphasizes wrapping each fruit, or using paper-lined barrels, and frequent checks to remove spoiled fruit. Store in a cool dry cellar away from strong odors, with tart varieties preferred for canning. Trim bruises before cooking and consider making apple sauce or canning whole apples for dumplings.

Farming Tips and Agronomy Notes from the Field
Alfalfa may be seeded spring or fall and a silo filled with high quality silage offers strong winter profit potential. Cats threaten nesting game birds, and weed control should slice below the surface. Green rye fed before milking lightly flavors milk. Strawberry bed care now influences next year’s crop. A well filled row of vigorous plants this fall supports the 1926 crop.
