Plans for the annual Rush County corn and farm products show were set for December 18 to 20 at the county extension office. Dr. and Mrs. George B. McNabb flew to New York Friday and stayed until Monday evening. They met their son George McNabb Jr and Mrs. McNabb from Fairbanks Alaska. Atty and Mrs. McNabb plan a return visit to Alaska.
The 1953 Indiana Legislature is expected to operate for two years without new taxes, aided by a balanced state treasury. The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce release notes both major parties oppose new levies and highlights issues from tax changes to unemployment benefits, wage laws, and veteran bonus programs. The ninth edition of Let’s Talk Politics will be distributed to chambers, schools, and associations to educate voters.
New Salem finished the season undefeated after an 8-6 victory over Carthage at Rushville. Carthage ends with a 2-5 mark after opening with wins against Manilla and Mays, then dropping games to Raleigh Knightstown Arlington Milroy and New Salem.
A son was born Sunday at Rush Memorial Hospital to Mr and Mrs Kenneth Schneider of Route 2 Carthage. The birth adds a new member to the family with no further details provided.
The Walter Manche residence on South Main Street is sold to Mr and Mrs Charles Pete Colwell.
Mr and Mrs Jack Overman and family were moving from near Wingate to Gwynneville when the truck wheels locked causing the vehicle to overturn slightly and damage furniture a deep freeze and a Frigidaire unit. No one was hurt and investigators found no blame assigned.
A blaze struck the Original Tractor Cab Co. plant in Arlington last Friday afternoon, leaving the factory a smoldering ruin. Loss runs into thousands as production was underway. owner Stanley Williams said insurance partially covers the damage. Fire units from Rushville Morris Town Manilla and Carthage battled the flames, saving the front and office area while the former Arlington High School gymnasium area burned.
Kenneth Wells checked into the Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis on Monday for surgery. He is listed as a patient undergoing a planned procedure with medical staff ready to perform the operation.
The Legion Auxiliary met at 8 00 pm at the Legion home with new president Janice Pitts presiding. Miss Millie Gray reported on the Girls School and minutes were read by secretary Jane Rhodes. Bertha Beck presented the treasurer annual and budget reports. The next district meeting is October 14 in Greensburg, with a presidents and secretaries conference in Indianapolis October 17 18. Reports covered food stand at the coon dog chase booth at the Fall Festival and cake walk returns for the festival. The meeting adjourned after a penny collection and social hour with refreshments by Babs Osborn and Norma McKain.
Despite bad weather a good turnout attended the first fellowship dinner by East Street Christian church members. After a cooperative meal the program featured music and a picture. The next meeting is set for the first Sunday evening in November with the same program committee. Home Garden Club plans a meeting next Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Robert Spangler.
Merrill S. Magee, 19, of Carthage Indiana, completes his Air Force basic airmen indoctrination at Lackland Air Force Base Texas known as the Gateway to the Air Force. The base near San Antonio is the world's largest Air Force base and hosts basic training for men and women. Magee prepares for technical training and a specialized Air Force career after the aptitude evaluation.
Pvt. Roy T. Robertson Jr. has arrived in Japan to serve with the 1st Cavalry Division. Veterans in Hokkaido are conducting intensive field training for new replacements. Robertson, a Carthage Indiana native, entered the Army last January after working as an electric spot welder for Delco Remy in Anderson.
Private Richard A. Marshall of Carthage Indiana has arrived in Korea to serve as a radio repairman with the 2d Infantry Division. The unit is noted for its hard fought battles including Heartbreak Ridge in October 1951 and Old Baldy Hill last July. Marshall is a Carthage High School graduate who attended Lain Drafting College in Indianapolis.
Pfc. Lee Retherford Jr arrived at Inchon Korea and has been transferred to Yongdongpo across the Han River near Soule. He serves in the Medical Corps and is stationed at 121st Evacuation Hospital APO 301 P. M. San Francisco California RA16360655.
Sgt. Charles Hoover has returned home from Camp Atterbury last week. Mrs. Rachel King says her son Robert King, stationed in Germany, is enjoying the scenery and getting along fine.
Family night will be observed by members of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union next Tuesday evening October 14 at the home of Mrs Mildred Nigh oO E 8. Baby dedication was observed Wednesday night at the Order of Eastern Star with Josephine Brown Grand Worthy Matron officiating. Refreshments were served. O E 8 Friendship Night was observed Monday night by Order of Eastern Star at Milroy. Attending from the local order were Mrs Leone Mosler Mrs Betty Brooks Mrs Rachel King Mrs Gouldie Kyser and Mrs Laura Scott.
Lions Club Eats Stand drew over 1100 visitors in two days. Of those, 288 had full ham or steak dinners. After expenses the club cleared 318.40 dollars, with unpaid meal tickets awaiting turnover, to support the Festival Community Center Fund.
Mrs. R. R. Reames and Mrs. Ben Nelson attended the funeral of aunt Mrs. Louie Yocum in the Friends church at Urbana with burial east of Urbana Illinois. Many residents were ill or absent over the weekend including Kay Sims Ray Gurley and Mrs. Dalrymple at hospital in Indianapolis.
Gatewood and Sons installed new machinery at their East Henley Street machine shop improving production efficiency. The update signals ongoing investment in local manufacturing facilities and may affect output timelines.
The Carthage High School band is invited to march in a giant parade Thursday night October 16 in Rushville serving as the kickoff for the State and National Corn Picking contests.
The Rush County Field Trial Club sponsors a free 16 mm color movie at Community Center Theater next Wednesday night October 15 at 8 pm. The Sedge Fields Story follows Paladin the national field trial champion dog and trainer Clyde Morton with action scenes of dogs and horses. The film is presented by theRalston Purina Company with a local rep present. Clarence Henley endorses the showing. Club officers are Burt O’Neal president, Earl Addison vice president, William Stangle sec treasurer.
Purdue landscape architect Prof H W Gilbert will visit Carthage school on October 21 and 22 for two work days. He will supervise planting of native trees and nursery stock with community organizations invited to cooperate. The project will require years of ongoing care for success.
The Tuesday Bridge club met at Mrs. Nelle Beher's home after dinner at the Holiday Lodge. Two tables played with honors won by Mrs. Hazel Chonan and Mrs. Mayme McCarty. Other guests included Mrs. Gertrude Bush, Mrs. Mary Tweedy, Mrs. Grace Gurley, Mrs. Helen Ruby and Mrs. May Winfield. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Holiday of Indianapolis were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gray and family.
The eighth annual Carthage Fall Festival drew strong crowds with displays booths a Lions Club dinner and a high turnout for a Home Talent Show. Nancy Murray was named Festival Queen and Allan Skinner Festival King after cash vote donations to the Community Center Festival Fund.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Leadbetter are on a short vacation this week visiting their daughter Mrs. William Moeller in St. Paul Indiana.
President hopeful Dwight Eisenhower told AFL leaders and delegates he would not curry special favors or outbid rivals for an endorsement. He advocated a fair shake for workers and employers, supported safeguarding amendments to Taft Hartley rather than outright repeal, and aimed for respectful treatment of union members without seeking political favors.

Mr and Mrs Earl Barrett departed early this week for Oregon to visit relatives. From Portland they will travel to California for the winter months.
Rally day will be observed at the Methodist church this Sunday with a special program. A goal of 150 has been set for this day. Special music will be furnished by the 4 Reeds, a duet by Joyce Rhoades and Bonnie Roland, and the Junior choir.
