The O. E. S. invites members to a Friends Night on Wednesday October 14 at 7 30 p m at the Masonic Hall.
Mrs Richard Harrold Mrs Even Tiller Mrs Paul Scott and Mrs Jack Overman of Rush County were among attendees at a tea and reception for Peggy Goldwater held at the Student Center Ball State Teacher's College on Wednesday afternoon.
Fred Flick returned home from Methodist Hospital Indianapolis. Dorothy Moore convalesces after surgery at Henry County Hospital. Fred and Mrs. McManus show slow improvement at Rush Memorial Hospital. J B Gardner visited Rush from Thursday to Sunday. Anna Phelps remains steady at Rushville Nursing Home. Oran Henley stays same at Carthage home. Mrs. Stanley Hawkins of Carthage improves after bed confinement last week.
Ten members met in the band room on October 6. A report on new majorette uniforms was given and a senior award sweater committee was formed with Norma McKain as chair and Ona Deboard and Rose Henderson as members. Bob Edwards announced October band activities including the Southport Marching Contest and the IU football game. Candy sales were discussed with a company representative present.
Mrs. Raymond Kennedy Mrs. Rachel King and Mrs. Russell Parish attended a reception for O.E.S. 12 District Deputy Betty Filby of Fountain City at the Masonic Hall in Fountain City Friday night.
Miss Lou Ella Magee a Ball State junior and daughter of Mr and Mrs Maine Magee is chosen as Style Editor of the Orient Ball State yearbook She will attend a Chicago conference from October 21 to 24 Lou served as Organization Director on the Orient in her sophomore year and majors English and Social Science
Spec. 5 Henry F. Ulrey 36 of Carthage died in Seoul South Korea from a gunshot wound ruled personal safety related. He was found wounded in his quarters and died at an Army hospital. Ulrey served with the marksmanship unit in Seoul and had roots in Charlottesville.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stanley visited Mr. and Mrs. John Stanley and their daughters in Salem Indiana. They attended the school pageant Wednesday night tied to Salem’s sesquicentennial observance this week and stayed overnight.
Word was received this week of the death of Mr. Jay Leavitt, a former teacher in the Carthage School.
The Friends Women of Carthage will gather on Wednesday October 14 at 7 30 p m. Hostess Mrs Ione Winslow to welcome attendees and lead the program.
Miss Bernice Branson reports the death of her brother Marlin W. Branson 66 of Indianapolis on Tuesday at the Veterans Hospital. Born February 1898 near Carthage he was the son of Fletcher Branson. Survived by widow a daughter four daughters from a previous marriage one brother Robert Branson Knightstown and one sister of Carthage funeral by Harry W Moore Chapel Indianapolis with services at 1 p.m. Friday at St Peter Lutheran Church Indianapolis.
About 475 people attended Rush County Jefferson Jackson dinner at the Durbin Hotel in Rushville where Democratic governor candidate Roger Branigin spoke. James Webb introduced candidates. John Ruby and John Dillon spoke on state issues and attorney general race.
The PTO launches a membership drive October 12 to 17 with a 50 cent fee per parent. Officers urge residents to support by cooperating when visited by the membership committee to fund school activities.
Carthage claimed first place in a three team cross country meet at Manilla with a score of 22 to 41 for Manilla and 62 for Arlington. Ellis of Carthage ran 10 24 to lead the field, followed by Back Smith Hunt Wells Mc Cabe Drake Kuhn Branam Porter.
Carthage High School Home Economics students will depart at 8 30 a m Thursday October 8 for a tour of model homes and apartments in Indianapolis the Furniture Show and Riley Center returning by 5 30 p m. Senior trip plans discuss Washington visits yearbook plans discussed senior class play tickets selling at Windsor's with limited reserved seats.
Interviews with seniors and their counselor Mr. Damm focus on past achievement and abilities and future planning. At the end, parents of all children are invited to discuss their child’s ability and achievement test scores and other key aspects of school life.
The menu lists daily offerings from Monday October 12 to Friday October 16 including chili and peanut butter sandwiches with milk on Monday, beans with ham on Tuesday, Italian spaghetti on Wednesday, vegetable soup on Thursday, and creamed eggs on Friday with sides such as crackers, buttered vegetables, fruits, and bread.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Todd hosted a wiener roast at their rural home on Saturday for Mr. Todd’s Sunday school class. Attendees included Rev. and Mrs. Gerald Collier and family, Eddie Stephens and children, Russell Shutt Jr., Gene Richmond and daughters, Tom Roberts and son, Velma Todd, John Nelson and son Duane, Lynn Ray, Dan and Dave Hunt, and Rose Willy from Carthage.
The Carthage Auxiliary met Monday at the Community Center with president Mrs. Forrest Beck presiding. Mrs. George McNabb led prayer, the Preamble and flag salute, and reports were heard as the group displayed the newly purchased flag for Henry Henley Library.
Saturday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hankins of Carthage included Mr. and Mrs. William Kinnett of Dillsboro and Ed Miles of Chicago. Due to Mrs. Hankins illness, her daughter and family Rev. and Mrs. Gene Miller and their daughter from Dayton Ohio visited here last Monday and Tuesday.
The Christian Women Fellowship met October 1 at 2 p m in the church basement. President Mrs Thomas Bush opened with a short poem. Secretary Mrs Donald Ruby and treasurer Mrs Forrest Beck reported. A Smorgasbord was planned and fruit cakes voted as a money making project. Joanna Gibson gave devotions. Mrs Forrest Moore taught on Inman's Christian Center Home for Mexicans. Hostesses were Mrs Leonard Jackson and Mrs Forrest Beck. Fifteen guests and three children attended.
The Legion Post plans its regular meeting on Wednesday October 14 at 8 p.m. at the Community Center all members urged to attend.
Joseph Cleveland Edington 31, of 529 East Eleventh Carthage died Friday at West Tenth Street Veterans Hospital Indianapolis after nine days as a patient. Army World War II veteran and Chevrolet plant employee survived by widow Virginia Morford Edington, four children, three sisters, a brother and several step-relatives. Services were held Monday at Hampton Mortuary Carthage with Town Cemetery burial.
Lt. Governor and Republican gubernatorial hopeful Richard Ristine criticized the Welsh Administration in Tell City and Angola, citing federal probes into the State Highway Department and alleged kickback rumors. He urged voters to replace the administration on November 3 with what he called honest, businesslike governance.
Major Curtis J. Porter, son of Thurman Porter of Carthage Indiana, serves as an operations staff officer with a PACAF unit in Saigon Vietnam. He assists with support for USAF personnel training Vietnamese forces to counter communist aggression. Porter is a Ball State graduate and Phi Sigma Epsilon member. his wife Judith is from Winchester Indiana.
Milroy Tuesday won its third county baseball title with an 11 to 3 victory over Morton Memorial at the victor’s field. Milroy led 4-0 in the fifth and added seven walks and timely hits, including Ronnie Jarbo’s RBI double and triple by Jarbo, to seal the win. In a prior final round Milroy blanked Carthage 11-0, with R Jarbo and Spright each contributing multiple hits and Wildey adding a three bagger.
Mr and Mrs Joe Stapp of near Knightstown mark their fiftieth wedding anniversary with an open house at the Shelter House in Knightstown on Sunday October 11 from 2 to 4 pm They wed in Michigan on October 15 1914 Their children Bertha Rowan Alvin Stapp Mary Clark Charles Stapp Justine Southwood James Stapp and Rev Thomas Stapp reside in nearby towns and cities.
The Garden Club will meet Tuesday October 13 at the home of Mrs Homer Hensler with Mrs Lloyd Manuel serving as co host.
Mr Odell Pitts Mrs and Jan Pitts spent Saturday at Eastgate enjoying a family excursion with a relaxed weekend vibe and time together.
Mrs. Winifred E. Gray, 78, of 303 North Walnut Street, Carthage, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday after a period of ill health. Born April 25, 1886 in Arlington Indiana, she was the daughter of Samuel and Minnie Fox Piper and a member of Arlington Methodist Church. Survived by daughter Thelma Gray and son Paul Gray, both of Carthage, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren, plus brother John B. Piper of Morristown. Her husband Marine L. Gray died in 1958. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hampton Mortuary with Rev. Russell Nigh officiating. Interment in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Check of 34 of 5 acre corn fields in Rush County shows an average moisture of 30.3 percent, with 125.9 official and 130.5 unofficial yields across the sample. Union Township leads at 142.5 bushels, Center 135.3, Posey 128.5. 102 fields remain to be checked this and next week.
Real estate report shows Rush County September total 356850 with farm transfers contributing 294000. Six farm deals exceeded 30000, including a 60000 sale and others at 50000 and 49000. Transfers involve Sattler Reddick Shaffer Proctor Foust Bowers Ross Pitts Whitfield Hinton Stoten and Nigh among others in Carthage Marion County and surrounding areas.
