On the Beat On the Beat SCHOOL NEWS BEGINS Vol. 11, No. 1 from Four Ways From the Office features Carthage High School news written and released by students. It marks eleven years of publication since 1946 without editing or censorship, inviting readers to follow weekly activities.
Mr and Mrs Stanley Thorpe of West Alexandria Ohio announce the birth of a son on Friday September 28 Mrs Thorpe is formerly Gloria Jean Lukens daughter of Mr and Mrs Maurice Lukens of Carthage.
Dr. George B. McNabb came home Friday from Methodist hospital in Indianapolis after a stay. He is resting at his residence and expected to resume duties soon.
Mr and Mrs Robert Nigh formerly of Carthage announce the birth of their son Carl Lynn born September 23 at Hancock County Hospital weighing 8 pounds when ready this item reads as a birth notice in the local newspaper.
The P T A will hold a meeting Tuesday night October 9 at the Community Center. Members are invited to attend and discuss community concerns and activities.
Mr and Mrs Earl Nowotne and Miss Henrietta Nowotne of Shelbyville flew home Thursday night from Fort Lauderdale Florida after a three weeks visit with Mr and Mrs Max Nowotne and their son.
Mrs. Freeman Blessinger won membership in a national chick raising honor club sponsored by Moorman Manufacturing Company in Quincy Illinois. She was among Beat the Experts Chick-ing Club winners in 19 states for raising chicks to eight weeks with feed efficiency better than two percent.
Two Knightstown men James F. Corbin and Charles E. Williams confessed to pistol whip robbery of John S. Hanrahan at a Greenfield area Gulf service station. Investigators link them to other Hancock Shelby Rush county burglaries and recovered $40 a wrist watch and two guns.
Community rummage sale sponsored by St. Rose of Lima Church Knightstown will be held at the Carthage Citizen Office on Saturday October 18. The event promises many good bargains and supports church activities.
Elsie Chappell died Friday evening in Rush Memorial Hospital after a three month heart ailment. She lived in Rushville with her sister Ada and was born September 11, 1888 in Rush County. Funeral services were held Monday at Walnut Ridge Friends church with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Local residents Mr and Mrs Howard E Henley joined others on a Times Theatre Train trip to New York City last week. The itinerary featured six theater productions two TV programs a yacht tour of Manhattan a liner tour Greenwich Village nightclub show a United Nations visit Empire State Building tour and an after theater party at Leones Restaurant.
Carthage High School opened East Central Conference cross country at Liberty Golf Course with a fifth place finish among nine teams. Middletown won the meet with 60 points, followed by Morristown 67 and Spiceland 103 as Carthage runners led by Sonny Smith 10th and Phil Parish 13th helped post 115 points.
Mr and Mrs Howard Souder hosted a farewell supper Saturday for their son Harold who left Tuesday October 2 for the armed service. Attending were Mr and Mrs Richard Miller and family Greensburg Mr and Mrs Norman McCorklz and Miss Carol Sher wood Rushville.
The Carthage High School announces a renewed staff for The Four Ways with General Editor Shirley Smith and reporters led by James Neal. Enrollment tops 461 as juniors win festival floats and Mary Lukens crowned 1956 Fall Festival Queen.
Lieutenant-Governor Harold W. Handley argued against unlimited local taxing powers for cities. He urged repealing the 15 cent property tax and warned that permissive local taxation would harm Indiana’s economy and drive industries away. He opposed a sales tax and called for federal highway funds with matching state support to fund roads and farm to market routes.
An enrolled Carthage student in the first semester of 1956 57 at Butler University is Barbara Anne Davis daughter of Mr and Mrs Roscoe Davis of Carthage. Butler schedules show a five day Thanksgiving break from November 21 at noon and Christmas vacation December 22 to January 2. First semester ends January 24 with second starting January 31.
New Salem erased a four run deficit in the seventh to beat Milroy 9 to 8 on their home field. Jim Colter sparked the rally with a triple, followed by five walks and a hit batsman, then Bob Reynolds delivered a game winning single past short.
A church preacher urges observance of the Sabbath as a divine command to worship and rest. He argues work includes amusement and that true rest lies in attending worship, citing biblical verses and the example of ancient Israelites. He calls believers to fill churches on the Sabbath.
The 11th Annual Fall Festival drew large crowds with a Smorgasbord euchre party and moving pictures, a well received Shower of Stars talent show, and a full parade. Winners were named in children’s contests, races, and queen judging with Miss Mary Lou Lukens crowned queen. Outside booths and rides supplemented three days of events ending with a festival dance.
Acknowledgment from Ora Clayton Jack Tweedy and Harold Dixon expressing gratitude to every individual committee and organization that aided the Fall Festival of 1956. Note promises a final financial report when ready.
Indiana Ike Day plans led by Mrs Von L Snyder with county chairmen appointed nationwide. National chairman Charles H Percy of Bell and Howell coordinates the coast to coast tribute with a CBS TV show planned. Mrs Snyder urges voter registration and participation this November as key to the President’s birthday observance.
Sunday October 7 Rally Day features Rev. Hak Sung Choi of Korea as guest speaker. Morning service at 10 30 a m afternoon public missionary service at 2 30 p m and evening service at 7 30 p m. Choi’s family and mother are reportedly in communist hands. Invitees urged to attend for a challenging message.
Mr. and Mrs. O. C. McCarty were in Indianapolis Tuesday. Mrs. Dora Watson returned Sunday to the home of Mrs. Merle Mann for further residence. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil McKee of Columbus, Ohio, spent the weekend with Mrs. McKee's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Lukens, and family.
